The Voice Actor's​ Ultimate Tool Kit


Take the plunge into voice-over! Learn performance skills, recording techniques, demo reel creation, casting tips and more.

  • This course will focus on providing you with everything you need to get your start doing voice-over and animation work, including:
    • One-on-one acting/performance coaching.
    • Hands-on recording and editing practice.
  • Receive expert guidance on “selling” your work and how to present your material so you get jobs.
  • This course will culminate in a public presentation of student work.



Undergraduate: DRAMA 420, 3 units
Graduate/post-baccalaureate: DRAMA 620, 3 units




Performers who have completed a beginning-level voice class and are interested in expanding their vocal skills.

This does not have to be a fancy recording; you can use a phone or a laptop to do this. The recorded sample may be in WAV or MP3 format. If you have specific questions about how to capture your voice sample for these purposes, please do not hesitate to contact Jane McKeever.

Vicki Lewis -

Vicki Lewis is perhaps best known for her role as Beth the secretary on the hit NBC series NewsRadio. She also starred in the NBC series Three Sisters with Dyan Cannon. She has had recurring and guest starring roles on Doll & Em, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Middle, Bones, Dirt, Grey’s Anatomy, Til Death, Surviving Suburbia, Sonny with A Chance, Melissa and Joey, Caroline in The City, Norm, The Five Mrs. Buchanans, Phenom, Murphy Brown, Grace Under Fire, Seinfeld, and Home Improvement. Her films include The Ugly Truth, Den Brother, The Last Day of Summer, California Dreamin, Godzilla, Mousehunt, Pushing Tin, I’ll Do Anything, The Huntress, Bye Bye Birdie, and Breakfast of Champions. Her voice can be heard in Pixar’s animated blockbuster Finding Nemo, as well as Alpha and Omega, Wonder Woman Justice League – The New Frontier, Doctor Doolittle: Million Dollar Mutts, Scooby Doo, Ben 10: Alien Force, Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures, King of The Hill, Rugrats, An Extremely Goofy Movie, Phineas and Ferb, and she voices Wonder Woman in Batman – The Brave And The Bold for Warner Brothers. She starred as Velma Kelly in the Bro​adway and Las Vegas productions of Chicago. She played Gloria Thorp​e in the Tony-nominated Damn Yankees, she performed as a soloist in An Evening With the Pops at Carnegie Hall, and in Pal Joey (opposite Patti Lupone and Peter Gallagher) for Encores. She received the Ovation Award for her performance in the world premiere of Michael John LaChuisa’s Hotel C’est L’Amour at The Blank Theatre in Los Angeles, and was nominated for an Ovation Award for her performance in How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying for the Reprise Theatre Company. Also for Reprise – I Love My Wife, My One and Only, City of Angels, and Carol Burnett in Conversation.

Philip Allen

Philip Allen –

Philip Allen is a sound designer, mixer and audio educator with more than 30 years of professional experience. He has designed permanent sound systems for the Music Center of Los Angeles, the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City and numerous smaller venues. His television credits include sound system design and equalization for the 56th and 59th “Golden Globe Awards” and the 33rd “Academy of Country Music Awards.” On film, he contributed the sound design to the feature film “Soultaker.” As a theatrical designer, he has designed more than 100 theatrical shows, including “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks” on Broadway, “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Spamalot,” “Hair,” “Chicago,” “The Producers,” “The Creature From the Black Lagoon” and “Cinderella.” Allen created the BFA Sound Design and Voice Over Acting curricula at the USC School of Dramatic Arts, where he serves as an associate professor.
