Sally Casanova Scholars

Students chosen for the Pre-Doctoral Program are designated Sally Casanova Scholars as a tribute to Dr. Sally Casanova, a champion of educational opportunity, who launched the program.

Through the California Pre-Doctoral Program, each scholar receives individualized guidance from a CSU faculty mentor and may also collaborate with faculty at doctoral-granting institutions across the country. The program’s structure helps students strengthen their academic preparation, explore advanced research environments, and gain valuable experience for competitive Ph.D. applications.

Scholarship Opportunities

Sally Casanova Scholars receive up to $5,000 to support activities that foster doctoral readiness, including:

  • Travel to academic symposia or professional meetings to present research or engage with scholars in their field
  • Graduate school preparation expenses, such as application and test fees
  • Visits to doctoral-granting institutions to learn about graduate programs and connect with potential faculty mentors
  • Professional development resources, including memberships in academic organizations and subscriptions to scholarly journals
  • Eligible for additional funding for an 8-week summer research experience at a major research university

Additionally, scholars gain more than funding. They join a statewide community of aspiring academics who represent the breadth and excellence of the CSU. This community connects scholars across disciplines and campuses, offering encouragement, collaboration, and professional networking opportunities that often extend well beyond the award year.

Each scholar receives one-on-one guidance from a CSU faculty mentor, whose role is central to the program. Mentors provide individualized academic and professional advising, share insight into the doctoral process, and help scholars build the confidence and connections needed to thrive in graduate school. Many scholars describe the mentorship experience as one of the most meaningful and transformative aspects of their journey.
