The Labor and Employee Relations Department manages collective bargaining, grievance arbitration and campus labor relations across the California State University. We work to promote a positive, productive relationship between the CSU and its 53,000 faculty and staff.
On October 5, the California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) determined that an impasse does exist in negotiations between the California State University (CSU) and the California Faculty Association (CFA) over the terms and conditions of a successor contract. Under state law, the next step in the dispute-resolution process will be the appointment of a mediator by the California State Mediation & Conciliation Service to assist in the discussions.
After the September 30 bargaining session, the California Faculty Association (CFA) notified the California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) that its negotiators believe they have reached an impasse with California State University’s (CSU) negotiators over the terms and conditions of a successor contract. The CSU intends to inform PERB that there is room for both sides to find areas of agreement and that the parties are not at impasse.
On August 24 and 27, CSU and CFA (Unit 3) representatives met to continue their negotiations over a successor agreement. The parties have now met 16 times since October 2020. As a reminder, CSU’s contract with CFA expired on June 30, 2021, but has been extended twice by mutual agreement through September 30.
