Report of the Chair

Remarks by Herbert L. Carter
Chair of the Board
Report to the Board of Trustees
March 17, 2010

It is a pleasure to welcome Nicole Anderson as the new student trustee. Ms. Anderson is a junior year student at Sacramento State with a major in international relations and is focused on attending law school following graduation.

I wanted to comment that my participation in a Super Sunday event was extremely fulfilling. This is the fifth year of the program wherein CSU trustees, presidents, and others visit African-American churches to address parents and their children about the value of higher education. I am really proud of this initiative and I expect Chancellor Reed will have more to say in his report.

March 4th was a statewide Day of Action in which educators, students, and parents protested the serious budget cuts from Kindergarten to higher education. I note that our protestors remained thoughtfully focused on the issues and on the policy makers and budget shapers in Sacramento. In particular, I commend the CSSA leadership – Steve and his colleagues - for urging CSU students to constructively engage the issues and not simply cut classes.

The San Marcos campus was designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education. This means the campus is eligible to apply for federal grants for equipment used in teaching, support of academic tutoring and counseling, and construction of new facilities and renovation of facilities.

Earlier this month, the Corporation for National and Community Service announced the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll to recognize colleges and universities that support effective community service and service-learning programs. Fourteen CSU campuses were among those recognized. I offer my congratulations to the students and faculty members involved in these community service activities.

The Channel Islands campus celebrates yet another milestone with a grand opening event. The 25,000 square-foot University Student Union will be officially opened tomorrow. The facility features student organization offices, meeting spaces, lounges, game room, and food service.

That concludes my report.

Chancellor Reed, will you give your report.
