Remarks by Dr. Charles B. Reed – May 9, 2012

Chancellor, California State University
CSU Board of Trustees Meeting: Chancellor’s Report
Long Beach, CA
May 9, 2012

Thank you, Chair Linscheid.

As you mentioned, we had the opportunity to honor Herb Carter and his wife Virginia last night at a reception at the State House.

Herb is a person who gave his life to the CSU. He has served at every level of our institution, and he has left his mark on many of our major initiatives.

We are very grateful to both Herb and Carol Chandler for their years of service to the CSU. We look forward to honoring them with the "Trustee Emeritus" title

Presidential Updates

Welcome to Willie Hagan, who will be serving as interim president at CSU Dominguez Hills beginning June 11.

And congratulations to Dianne Harrison, who has been named the new president of Cal State Northridge - She will start on June 11.

Also, many of you know that Ham Shirvani has accepted the position of chancellor of the University of North Dakota System.

I have appointed an interim president at CSU Stanislaus - Joe Sheley, who currently serves as provost at CSU Sacramento. Joe will also start on June 11.

Also, this will be Bill Eisenhardt's last meeting. Thank you, Bill, for your outstanding service. The board is continuing its search for a new Cal Maritime president.

Last but not least I want to congratulate Mo Qayoumi for his investiture at San Jose State.

We also have some good news regarding San Jose State -they were admitted to the Mountain West Conference earlier this month.

Achievements

The California Department of Education has awarded the contract to develop the state framework for the new K-12 English and Language Arts curriculum to the CSU's Center for the Advancement of Reading. This is an important piece of the transition to the Common Core State Standards, and it recognizes the critical leadership in reading and literacy that we provide.

At San Francisco State: George Marcus, a San Francisco State alumnus and former CSU trustee, and his wife Judy are making a gift of $1 million to establish an endowed chair in honor of Bob Corrigan.

The gift will establish the Robert A. Corrigan Endowed Chair in American Studies.

Trustee Ken Fong added $200,000 toward the endowment. Mrs. Bettye Ferguson, a special friend of the university, added $100,000. The total amount of the gift is $1.3 million.

President Corrigan is an “Americanist” and a respected scholar in the field. This is the 7th endowed chair to be established at San Francisco State.

Joint Advocacy Day

On May 1, the CSU joined with the University of California and the California Community Colleges to participate in a joint advocacy day in Sacramento.

Together our systems graduate 300,000 students each year into California's workforce.

Our policymakers and business leaders are increasingly recognizing the importance to our future economy of supporting higher education.

Last month I met with two of our industry advisory groups - hospitality and entertainment - and those leaders continue to be eager to work with us.

Chair Linscheid, that concludes my report.
