I aspire to be a role model for other immigrants who’ve experienced hardships.

2023

In search of a better life, Monica Chicas fled El Salvador with her young son to the United States. Determined to change her circumstances, she knew a college education was the key. She is now majoring in business administration at Cal State East Bay.

For the past five years, Monica has worked for the West County Detention Facility in the education division. She has also become the go-to translator for many Spanish-speaking neighbors in her community, making medical appointments and translating letters on their behalf.

Monica aspires to be a role model for immigrant women.
