Stephen Perez

Stephen Perez was appointed interim president of San José State in January 2022.

Perez previously served as provost and vice president of Academic Affairs and a professor of economics at California State University, Sacramento.

As provost, Perez provided leadership and support for the Division of Academic Affairs, including faculty and staff in all colleges, the university library, International Programs and Global Engagement, the Offices of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, the Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development, the Office of Faculty Advancement, the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Office of Academic Excellence and a number of key support offices.

He taught economics at Virginia Commonwealth University and Washington State University before coming to Sacramento State in 2001.

Perez’s research has explored most macroeconomic topics, but a specific interest has been evaluating the ability of econometric techniques to discover the truth, issues of causality in macroeconomics and sports economics.
