Dr. Antoni Luque

Dr. Antoni Luque is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at San Diego State University. Dr. Luque has developed a sophisticated pedagogical arsenal that has combined flipped classes, online videos, team-based learning, knowledge surveys, contract grading, and metacognition. Moreover, he has helped disseminate these practices among colleagues and developed a solid network of faculty interested in active learning and evidence-based pedagogies. His strength is in developing courses where students use their time effectively in class and develop valuable soft, technical, and intellectual skills that align with their professional careers. Yet, his commitment to student success continues beyond the classroom. As part of the Area of Excellence in viromics, his research takes an original approach to combining mathematics, computational simulations, physics, and biology to understand the role of phages (viruses that infect bacteria) in coral reefs and humans. His lab has fourteen students that participate in collaborative teams and conduct research that will make meaningful contributions to the field. Since 2016, he has also organized more than 60 workshops where students, postdocs, and faculty present their interdisciplinary research in biology and mathematics.
