John Roussell, Ph.D.

Outstanding Teacher Award, 2013
Chico
Department of Communication Design

I’m that professor who expects students to go out and change the world. I want them to tell their story and make the world how they want it to be.
John Roussell has got all the right moves—and not only in the classroom. The charismatic communication design professor can be seen doing his variation of the salsa in the music video for Jay Z’s song “Picasso Baby,” but his dancing is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his presence on campus. He teaches more than 300 students each semester and spent the last two years co-producing a documentary, No Excuses, which chronicles a Harlem school’s efforts to revitalize its physical education system. He also designed an online model to enhance student learning that connects students with communication design professionals to solve real-life problems and scenarios. Roussell is this year’s Outstanding Teacher Award recipient.
