About Us

The Basic Needs Initiative provides a framework for the CSU's 23 campuses to take a more coordinated approach to developing programs and strategies that support students who are experiencing food and housing insecurity.

How the Basic Needs Initiative Began

Following findings from an initial snapshot study of CSU campuses in 2016, university leaders began to develop and enhance resources for students experiencing food and housing insecurity. This included increasing CalFresh outreach and education on campus; advocacy on state and federal legislation for housing and hunger security; and developing a systemwide framework of services and partnerships.

An in-depth study in 2018 provided more detailed information on the significance of food and housing insecurity on each of the 23 CSU campuses. This research revealed insights and best practices that have informed the CSU's systemwide Basic Needs Initiative and offers a better understanding of campus-based interventions to support students.
