Her book of poetry Versed (2009) received the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. It was also a finalist for the National Book Award and won the 2009 National Book Critics Circle Award.
Her book Next Life was selected by the New York Times as one of the most notable books of 2007.
Her books Up to Speed (2004) and Veil: New and Selected Poems (2001) were finalist for the PEN Center USA Award in Poetry.
She has taught writing for almost 20 years at the University of California, San Diego.
