Former Major League Baseball second baseman who played for the Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, and Oakland Athletics. Two-time World Series Champion (1975, 1976), and two-time National League "Most Valuable Player" (1975, 1976) while with the Cincinnati Reds, among other honors. The Reds unveiled a statue of Joe in September 2013.
Inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990 and now serves as Vice Chairman of the board of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Continues to work with the Cincinnati Reds as a special advisor, and serves as a member of the board of the Baseball Assistance Team, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping former Major League, Minor League, and Negro League players through financial and medical hardships.
Emmy-award-winning broadcaster for ESPN. Continues to host a nationally syndicated radio show (
Conversations with Joe Morgan
) for Sports USA.
He promised his parents before signing a professional baseball contract that he would finish his college education when his playing career was over.
Established a scholarship fund for CSUEB kinesiology and physical education majors. Received an honorary doctorate from CSUEB in 2008.
