Description

Discover the magic of German art song music and poetry where it originated in this course in beautiful southern Germany! Elevate your skills in diction, performance, and artistry through coaching, masterclasses, and professional presentations. Excursions and concerts in unique settings will enhance this experience for singers and pianists.

Who should take this class

Singers and collaborative pianists ready to elevate their performance and understanding of German Lieder to the next level. Singers should be enrolled in, or have recently completed, an undergraduate or graduate Vocal Performance/Music Education degree program and have some stage or concert experience. Pianists should be enrolled in, or have recently completed, an undergraduate or graduate degree in Piano Performance/Music Education and have some experience with art song.

Required application materials

  • All Students: Provide a 250-word narrative describing your level of proficiency singing or playing, your performance experience, and why this course is the perfect fit for you right now.
  • Vocalists: Provide a link to a video recording from a recent performance singing two songs, one of which must be a German art song.
  • Pianists: Provide video recording(s) of your performance of two German art songs with a singer, where you are clearly visible in the camera frame.

Important Course Information


This course is subject to cancellation due to COVID-19 or other unforeseen circumstances. All Fees paid to Summer Arts and Fresno State will be fully refundable in the event of course cancellation.
All participants will need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Religious or medical exemptions may be considered.

Passport

All participants will need a valid and current passport for travel to Germany. You will need to provide your passport number to CSU Summer Arts by June 30, 2022.

If you do not have a current passport, you are encouraged to apply for one immediately. Please check the Passport Office schedule before you apply and find out if you will need a rush order to obtain your passport in time. United States citizens do not need a visa to enter Germany, however, citizens of other countries may.

Travel

Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements. CSU Summer Arts does not provide any group flights, reservations, or recommendations for this course. You will need to provide CSU Summer Arts with your travel information.

Participants must arrive in Trossingen by July 27. The first class meeting will be on Thursday, July 28 at a time to be determined.

Lodging

CSU Summer Arts is not offering group lodging arrangements in Trossingen. Participants are responsible for their own arrangements with any hotel, vacation rental, or hostel in Trossingen. You will need to provide CSU Summer Arts with your travel information.

CSU Summer Arts recommends the KunstWerk B hostel​ for participants. The KunstWerk B is a beautiful facility, and is about a 2-minute walk from the school, and an easy walk to grocery stores and other conveniences. Shared room rates begin at 20 euros (about $23 dollars) per night without attached bath and 25 euros (about $31) per night with bath. Contact them directly for a reservation.

Scholarships

Scholarship awards range from $100 to $2000 and about 80% of students receives some scholarship assistance. Scholarship funds are not available for housing or travel costs.

Dr. Robin Fisher

Robin Fisher

Dr. Robin Fisher is Professor of Voice at Sacramento State University and Director of Lingua e Canto, a summer program in Italy for college singers, which she founded in 2013. She studied voice at the University of Vienna as a recipient of a Rotary Foundation grant, as well as the Hamburg State University as a Fulbright Scholar; she received her D.M.A. degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Under professional contract in Germany from 1986-90, Fisher performed over 15 leading operatic roles. Recordings include works for flute and soprano (The Nightingale Sings), and sacred American art songs with pianist Dalton Baldwin (God be in my Heart). Her publications include a second edition of American Art Song & American Poetry, a collaboration with scholar/performer Ruth Friedberg, and The Selected Writings of John Duke (2007). Fisher's students are active performers and teachers in major metropolitan centers in the USA and abroad.

Peter Nelson

Peter Nelson

Pianist Peter Nelson has given concerts with many international artists on four continents and has made numerous recordings and television appearances. On faculty at several German institutions, he has been professor for Lied Interpretation and piano at the University of Music in Trossingen since 2003. ​

Hatem Nadim


Alexander Hahn​

A proponent of art song, Dr. Alexander Hahn has performed in concert halls across North America, and has given scholarly presentations for NATS conferences and the College Music Society. He earned both a Master's degree and Artist Diploma at the Yale School of Music, a Bachelor's degree from the Mannes School, and a doctorate from Stony Brook University. Dr. Hahn is Director of Vocal Studies in the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at CSU Long Beach. ​


Hatem Nadim

Hatem Nadim

Hatem Nadim began formal studies at the Cairo Conservatory at the age of ten. In demand as a collaborator and masterclass instructor, he has most recently been on faculty every year at the Vielsaitig Festival in Füssen, Germany since 2002, the Opera Academy of California, and the Fresno Summer Orchestra Academy since 2012.

Michelle Breedt​

Mezzo-soprano Michelle Breedt has been a highly-sought after performer throughout the world in repertoire from Mozart to Wagner to Kurt Weill. A regular on such stages as the Vienna Opera, Bayreuth, the Operá Bastille in Paris, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and more, she is known as a leading performer in such roles as Carmen, Brangäne, Cherubino, Eboli, and Melisandre.​
