(July 27, 2009) – The California State University Board of Trustees today expressed confidence in the leadership of CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed and the university’s plan to address a $584 million budget deficit.  The Board also acknowledged the faculty’s vote to support the university’s plan by adopting a two-day per month furlough.  CSU has proposed furloughs for all 47,000 employees to reduce employee salary expenses by $275 million.

"These are challenging times for everybody, and the board and the CSU presidents want to express our support and confidence in the leadership of Chancellor Reed as we work through these difficult decisions together," said CSU Board Chair Jeffrey Bleich on behalf of the trustees.  “We all recognize that there are no good options when you are confronting a massive set of budget cuts.  We thank Chancellor Reed for developing a balanced approach that shares this burden equitably among every member of our community.  We appreciate the faculty vote to negotiate furloughs as that will help us to preserve jobs, maintain more class sections, and ultimately, serve our students.  We know it was not an easy decision, but it was the right decision.  We know that by focusing on our common mission we can move forward even during these difficult times."
