CSU Earns Federal Grant for Innovative Reading, Writing Course
The California State University has been awarded a federal FIPSE (Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education) grant to speed the adoption of its model Expository Reading and Writing Course statewide. The three-year funding totals nearly $600,000.
The course, developed by CSU faculty in partnership with high school teachers, seeks to sharpen student literary skills so that they will meet the expectations university professors have of their incoming students. Nationally, 30 to 60 percent of students entering college need remedial coursework in English.
The CSU has been working since 2001 on an Early Assessment Program that identifies areas of academic weakness in high school students before they reach the university level. This course is designed to help high school seniors strengthen their critical reading, analytic, and expository writing skills.
The funding will allow the CSU to evaluate the results of the course and make improvements, to assist new teacher candidates in using the course effectively, and to begin the process of adopting the course across the state. The federal funding is a further recognition that the CSU’s Early Assessment Program offers a national model of how higher education leaders and K-12 partners can better prepare students for college.
The Expository Reading and Writing Course has recently been approved as satisfying the common college entrance requirements for both the California State University and the University of California.
The California State University is the largest system of senior higher education in the country, with 23 campuses, approximately 405,000 students and 44,000 faculty and staff.
