CSU Reaches out to Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities with Journey to Success College Fairs

CSU Dominguez Hills to host initial event on June 4

(May 23, 2011) - As part of ongoing efforts for outreach into underserved Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, the California State University will host a series of "Journey to Success" college fairs at CSU campuses across the state. The first of the Journey to Success college fairs will take place at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The college fair will feature a variety of interactive workshops and information sessions on topics including financial aid, admissions, and parent and college life. Assembly Member Warren Furutani (55th district) will serve as a speaker at the event.

The Journey to Success fairs are part of the CSU's Asian American and Pacific Islander Initiative (AAPI). One of several key CSU initiatives established with goals of improving college access and graduation achievements for underserved students from across the state, the AAPI targets California's Samoan, Tongan, Marshallese, Hawaiian, Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Fijian and underserved Chinese, Vietnamese and Filipino communities.

The Journey to Success fairs are a collaboration of university officials and community members with the purpose of providing a culturally significant experience for parents and students. Among the goals for Journey to Success include:

  • Reaching traditionally underrepresented communities
  • Providing a multi-cultural experience
  • Empowering families with knowledge about how to make college a reality
  • Engaging students in a college environment
  • Opening doors of opportunity

Cal State Long Beach will host the next Journey to Success fair on Saturday, October 8 and Cal State Fullerton and Cal State L.A. will also host fairs to be announced later.
