(November 12, 2010) – The California State University’s Foster Youth Program was awarded a $40,000 grant from Sleep Train’s Annual Charity Golf Classic to promote and support the success of former foster youth in higher education.

“The CSU is committed to helping California’s youth access higher education and reach their educational goals,” said CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed. “Sleep Train’s generous contribution will be a key factor in enhancing the College Pathways Program to further its mission of increasing the number of foster children in college.”

The donation will be used to provide the opportunity for students from foster care to continue with their education after graduation from high school through various systemwide scholarship programs and for the enhancement, production and distribution of the Foster Youth Educational Planning Guide.

Funded by the Stuart Foundation, the CSU’s Foster Youth Program created the California College Pathways initiative to provide comprehensive support services for former foster youth in their efforts to gain a university education. The program helps foster youth in California achieve an academic outcome by expanding access to campus support programs, including assistance in financial aid, housing, academic advising, counseling, employment opportunities, career planning and life skills workshops, among others. The initiative developed the Foster Youth Planning Guide to serve as a compilation of programs and resources that can assist foster youth and caregivers during the transition into college.
