Reimagining AI in Higher Education: A Timeline

In February 2025, the California State University launched a first-of-its-kind public-private initiative with some of the world’s leading tech companies to leverage the power of artificial intelligence to create an AI-empowered higher education system that could surpass any existing model in both scale and impact.

The CSU’s unprecedented integration of AI technologies made training, learning and teaching tools available across the entire system, ensuring that its more than 470,000 students and 61,000 faculty and staff have equitable access to cutting-edge tools that will prepare them to meet the rapidly changing education and workforce needs of California. CSU Launches Systemwide AI Initiative
CSU Chancellor Mildred García announced the launch of the CSU AI Initiative to become the nation's first and largest AI-empowered university system. The public-private initiative with some of the world's leading tech companies and the Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom included offering ChatGPT Edu to all CSU faculty, staff and students as well as establishing the AI Workforce Acceleration Board.

CSU AI Commons Launches
The CSU's Department of Academic Technology Services launched the CSU AI Commons to provide tools and information for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

CSU Establishes GenAI Subcommittees
In addition to the Systemwide Generative AI (GenAI) Advisory Committee which first convened in January 2024, the CSU established subcommittees in the areas of teaching & learning; privacy, security and procurement; and enhanced productivity applications.

AI for Social Good Hosts Third Annual AI4SG Student Innovation Showcase
Launched in 2018 by undergraduate business students at San José State, the AI for Social Good (AI4SG) project offers curriculum that engages students to develop AI-powered solutions to local real-world problems. Since its inception, AI4SG has expanded to Cal State Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State San Bernardino and the CSU Chancellor's Office. During the showcase, students on nine projects presented the solutions they developed throughout the academic year.

CSU Announces the Winners of the Artificial Intelligence Educational Innovations Challenge
After reviewing more than 400 submitted proposals, the CSU announced the 63 faculty-led projects selected as the winners of the first-ever Artificial Intelligence Educational Innovations Challenge. The projects were chosen for their potential to enable transformative teaching methods, foster groundbreaking research and address key concerns about AI adoption within the academic environment.

AI in July Returns
The Cal State Tech team conducted the second annual “AI in July" engagement event, drawing 1,676 CSU attendees across 21 events. The month-long event featured multiple keynotes, AI prompt challenges, expert panels with the AI Workforce Acceleration Board, technical deep dives, and more showcases highlighting campus AI accomplishments.

During the session, CSU leaders, faculty, industry partners and students gathered to share how the university system is integrating AI tools into education and workforce development.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Holds AI Summer Camps for Students
The Cal Poly Digital Transformation Hub hosted two free, weeklong AI summer camps at the university to give both CSU and California Community College (CCC) students hands-on learning with AI. The first week was open to 100 CSU students, and the second to 100 CCC students. During the camp, participants learned AI skills and worked in teams to apply them to real challenges in their respective university systems submitted by faculty and staff. The weeks culminated in the teams pitching their ideas to peers and mentors.

CSU Partners with Governor and Tech Companies to Prepare Californians for AI Future
Chancellor Mildred García joined California Governor Gavin Newsom and other education and AI-industry leaders to sign an MOU with top GenAI firms, launching a partnership to train Californians for careers in AI.

CSU Launches First-Ever Systemwide Survey
The CSU AI Survey invited faculty, staff and students to participate in the largest and most comprehensive study of AI perceptions and usage undertaken in higher education.

AI Student Micro-Internships Pilot Program Launches
Through the program, CSU student interns work on short-term, paid, professional assignments with an industry partner that range from 10 to 40 hours of work. These projects enable students to demonstrate skills, explore career paths and build their networks as they seek the right full-time role.

San José State Publishes “Landscape of AI" Study
The study captured the state of AI-related topics like policies, curriculum, training and research across higher education in California.

Cal State Tech Friday Event Highlights Responsible Use of AI
Among the training offered in AI use at the CSU, the Cal State Tech event “Responsible AI in Higher Education: Governance, Privacy and Institutional Readiness" focused on implementing responsible and ethical AI across the system, such as critical governance, privacy frameworks and institutional readiness.

Cal State San Bernardino Receives Funding for Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality Research and Retraining Center
The university's Center for Cyber and AI was awarded $1 million in a federal grant to establish the center and grow the region's AI, virtual reality and cybersecurity capabilities. It joins a number of CSUs also launching centers and initiatives focused on AI education and workforce preparation. For example, San Diego State opened the James Silberrad Brown Center for Artificial Intelligence in March 2023, Sacramento State the National Institution on Artificial Intelligence in Society in December 2023, Cal Poly Pomona the Avanade AI & Innovation Center in March 2025, and San José State the AI Center for Civic and Social Good in March 2026.

CSU and IBM Host CSU AI Hackathon
The event demonstrated how emerging AI technologies can be applied responsibly to real-world problems and emphasized safety, transparency and positive impact. About 160 students from the CSU's five Los Angeles County universities—Dominguez Hills, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge and Pomona—designed innovative, AI-powered solutions in health care, semiconductor manufacturing and education.

CSU Releases Report on AI Survey Findings
The report, "Ahead of the Curve: What the Nation’s Largest Public University System is Learning about AI" outlines key findings based on responses from more than 94,000 students, faculty and staff—including that 95% of survey respondents had used at least one AI tool. It likewise explores these groups' attitudes toward AI tools and reveals ways in which the CSU can better support students, faculty and staff in their use.
