The Educator Quality Center welcomed Jimmy Luong to the EdQ team in September of 2021. Jimmy was recruited to the EdQ team through Harvard's Strategic Data Project, whose mission is to transform the use of data in education to improve student achievement. Jimmy will serve as EdQ's technical lead for Phase 2 of the EdQ DataView Dashboard Expansion Project, where he will focus primarily on clinical placement tracking systems, fieldwork observation systems, and program assessments.
Jimmy believes that improving how we prepare our current and future educators will ultimately lead to the best educated students who will solve society's most pressing challenges. He's particularly interested in democratizing analytics for our educator preparation programs, understanding how to increase diversity and inclusion in the teacher workforce, and empowering campus leadership to make data-driven decisions.
His career started in the civil engineering and project management field, in which he led design teams to build and install living roofs and green walls. Jimmy entered the field of education as an analyst at the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Scotland's non-governmental body responsible for providing higher education provision. At the SFC, Jimmy developed interactive data dashboards, known as the Institutional Profiles, allowing executive staff to derive insights on student achievement and performance for the community college system in Scotland. The dashboards were so well received that the SFC has since developed similar dashboards for the university sector. Most recently, Jimmy worked on Patagonia's Action Works platform as a data analyst, elevating the team's use and understanding of data to best support the 1,000+ grantees that Patagonia sponsors.
Jimmy is originally from Lakewood, California, a small suburb in Los Angeles County. He now lives in Sacramento with his wife who works in the informal education space. You may see him at Sacramento Kings games if the Lakers are in town! He received his Master's of Science in civil engineering from UCLA and his Bachelor's of Science in environmental engineering from UC San Diego.
