CSU Chancellor Mildred García Scholar
A first-generation, neurodivergent student, Bianca Esparza has taken a
nontraditional path to higher education. Her parents struggled with addiction, she
spent time in the foster system and was a victim of childhood abuse. But she says
these experiences have shaped her resilience and drive for a better future. She
is currently pursuing her doctorate in audiology at Sacramento State and plans
to one day become an audiologist with her own practice so that she can serve
diverse and underserved populations. She previously earned her undergraduate
degree in communication sciences and disorders from Sacramento State and
began her doctoral program the following year.
As a graduate assistant, Bianca supports faculty research on topics such as over-the-counter hearing aids and has served as a guest lecturer in undergraduate
courses. She is also a member of the Student Academy of Audiology and
participates in community outreach events. But she considers balancing her
graduate studies with motherhood to be her greatest accomplishment.
While pursuing her studies, Bianca has developed the work ethic, structure
and self-trust needed to succeed while navigating the challenges of ADHD and
imposter syndrome. Each step forward is a reminder that, while her journey has
been different than others, it is equally powerful and meaningful.
