Growing up… Jesus grew up in Carson, California and lived there until he was 18 years old. He has three brothers and one sister and is the second oldest in his family. His parents immigrated from Mexico. His dad is from Zacatecas, and his mom is from Guadalajara. His parents moved to the U.S. to provide their children with a safer environment to grow-up in and with more financial and educational opportunities.
Education… Jesus is majoring in computer engineering at Cal State Long Beach and plans to graduate in fall 2023. He loves his major because he gets to build and code exciting projects. Jesus is currently working on an interesting and challenging project where he constructs a robot that moves by itself. One of his current goals is to join an engineering student club to network. As a freshman, he had no idea he would want to become a Computer Engineer, but because he was good at math, it was a natural decision to major in it. In addition, he has always been fascinated by the technology behind computers making it easier for him to major in Computer Engineering.
Favorite Things to Do… Jesus' favorite movies are Interstellar and The Dark Knight. His hobbies include working out, watching sports, and playing video games.
Future Goals… Jesus' future goal is to get a master's degree in computer engineering. After, he intends to work in the engineering field and hopefully make enough money to help his siblings pay for college.
Joining the STEM-NET Team… "STEM-NET excites me because I believe what the program is accomplishing is great. STEM-NET's vision is to increase the number of students in STEM fields; the preparation and employment of superb diverse STEM-Students are necessary considering STEM field are very much in demand. This vision aligns with mine because of my personal experience. My schools never prepared me for college, so when it was time to apply for college, I did not know what to expect or what to major in. I ended up going to UC Santa Cruz, majoring in business. I wasn't prepared for college, and I didn't find the major interesting. I never really explored what I wanted to do and had no idea what I would do with my life. I did get halfway through the major because I studied and did my work, but I dreaded my classes because they were boring. I ended up leaving the school to go to my local community college and take classes so I could figure out what I wanted to do. Eventually, I ended up at CSULB, majoring in computer engineering. If I had better preparation and guidance in high school, this could have been avoided. The idea of college was just thrown at me a month before applying, and I believe many students will benefit from being prepared and exploring possible majors before college. I believe what STEM-NET is doing will impact many students' lives, and I'm proud to be onboard".
