CSUPERB has developed a new strategic plan to guide its operations between 2023 and 2028. The Strategic Planning Council (SPC) was convened on October 6, 2022, for a one-day retreat involving SPC members, to examine the state of the CSU biotechnology community’s purpose, values, and goals, to prioritize investments, to develop programming, and to frame annual operational plans. The SPC was aided by an outside facilitator, The Strelo Group3.

The SPC brainstormed and through rigorous discussion, debate and prioritization identified the following broad strategic goals for 2023 through 2028: 1) expand transformational educational experiences in biotechnology for all CSU students; 2) expand collaboration with, and engagement of, industry with CSUPERB; and 3) develop novel ways to increase the visibility of CSUPERB at local and national levels; and 4) double CSUPERB funding by targeting diverse income streams to implement the above objectives.

CSUPERB must remain a vibrant community, maintaining its intellectual focus and energy with access to, and alignment with, system-wide decision-making. CSUPERB’s impact will depend on collaborative partnerships, alumni networks, faculty volunteerism, administrative support, and campus engagement. Over the next 5 years, CSUPERB will continue to champion experiential education, make seed investments in faculty-driven academic programs and research projects, and remain open to new ways of thinking and creating transdisciplinary frameworks within the university and the surrounding biotechnology ecosystem. During this next phase, CSUPERB will increase efforts to engage more deeply with industry and leverage those external partnerships for better workforce development. CSUPERB will also increase financial support for its programs through diverse funding streams. In addition, CSUPERB will roll out a new organizational scheme in which regional hubs will complement the work of the central CSUPERB office to increase regional industry engagement, foster partnerships, catalyze new professional development opportunities, and increase cross-campus collaborations for higher local visibility of CSU's biotechnology enterprise.
