Cal State LA awarded biology professor Dr. Andrés Aguilar an Outstanding Professor Award on Sept. 4 during the university's inaugural Employee Recognition and Service Awards Celebration. The university recognized Dr. Aguilar for his teaching excellence and impactful professional achievements. A faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences, he has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and directs NSF-funded research focused on rockfish speciation and the conservation genomics of threatened California aquatic species.
The Grant Development Program (GDP) application deadline has been extended to September 23, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. We have revised the RFP language regarding how campuses should calculate the WTU rate for PIs requesting reassigned time funding. COAST is no longer requiring WTUs to be calculated using the system-wide Minimum Annual Rate. PI(s) should work with their campus and associated policies to calculate the cost per weighted teaching unit (WTU) for the PI(s) requesting reassigned time funding. To account for the additional time to route revised proposals we have extended the GDP deadline.
Dr. Jeremy T. Claisse and his research team at Cal Poly Pomona have published a new study, available on PLOS ONE, mapping artificial reefs across southern California with high resolution, co-authored alongside three students. Supported by a State Science Information Needs Program (SSINP) award from CSU COAST (2021–22), the study links sonar-derived habitat metrics directly to reef design and construction materials. The publication, along with its comprehensive appendix of reef complex maps, highlights crucial findings for regional marine habitat management.
