Microplastics and California Agriculture: Aligning Policy, Science, and Practice

This briefing will bring together researchers, practitioners, and state partners to examine the emerging issue of microplastics in agricultural systems and explore collaborative solutions. Speakers will discuss the sources and pathways of microplastics in agricultural landscapes, including plasticulture, atmospheric deposition, and soil processes, as well as the latest research on their environmental and potential food system impacts.
The discussion will also highlight practical approaches to reducing agricultural plastic pollution, including innovations in plastic alternatives, recycling and recovery programs, economic considerations for growers, and opportunities to strengthen infrastructure and incentives. Panelists will explore how partnerships among researchers, growers, state and federal agencies, industry, and retailers can support sustainable agricultural practices while protecting California's natural resources.
