CSU STEM VISTA graduates

Our work is focused on eliminating race, class and gender disparities in STEM.

The CSU STEM VISTA program is a one year national service opportunity where you apply your skills, knowledge and talents to support STEM students in the California State University system. All projects within CSU STEM VISTA are focused on eliminating race, class, and gender disparities in STEM undergraduate graduation rates.

As a member of the CSU STEM VISTA cohort, you will take part in a learning community of VISTAs across the California State University system. The program is designed to promote your growth professionally and personally as you create and enhance programs for STEM students. You will be trained to utilize sustainable, asset-based approaches that engage students of color, students from low-income communities, and students who are first in their family to attend college.

Selected VISTA members are matched with a CSU campus team and work full-time on STEM student success projects for one year. Alongside your campus team, you will develop, strengthen and expand the effectiveness of learning experiences for STEM students, with the ultimate goal of increasing retention and completion for all students.

VISTA members are also part of the national service program, AmeriCorps VISTA. Often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) has been fighting poverty in America since 1965. We embody the AmeriCorps VISTA program’s core principles, which include:

  • Anti-Poverty Focus: VISTA members support CSU campus efforts to support students from all backgrounds, specifically focused on serving students who come from low-income communities, students of color, and student who are first in their family to attend college.
  • Community Empowerment: VISTA members believe in and utilize the strengths of the students they are serving and incorporate their voice into the planning, development and implementation of their projects.
  • Capacity Building: VISTA members expand the ability of CSU campuses to eliminate equity gaps by building infrastructure, expanding partnerships, securing long-term resources, coordinating trainings and much more.
  • Sustainable Solutions: VISTA members serve as a short-term resource for CSU campuses to achieve lasting solutions to increasing STEM student retention and completion.
