PRINT ROBOTIC FINGER​S IN 24 Hours

CSU CHANNEL ISLANDS

 

What: Fully functional humanoid robotic hands and fingers controlled by a user wearing finger and muscle sensors; the device is connected to biceps and shoulders that will eventually be mobile.

Who: Fourth-year CSU Channel Islands computer science major Steven Romp and his capstone advisor, Houman Dallali, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science and mechatronics.

Material: ABS plastic, for its strength and durability

Time to Print: Ten fingers take 24​ hours; hands take 34 hours each; arms, 347 hours; and chest, 100 hours

Lesson: “It's been a huge learning exercise because I've had to learn electrical en​gineering to figure out how to have the right amount of voltage and current up through the arms so it can move its forearm," Romp says.
