Over a dozen CSU campuses were recognized for excellence, diversity and access in the 2018 Best Colleges ranking by U.S. News and World Report released September 12.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was listed as the number one top public university in the western region for the 25th consecutive year. Fifteen other campuses were ranked, with Pomona, San Jose, Chico and Long Beach placing in the top 10.

Cal Maritime was ranked as the number one public college in the western region and third overall among colleges in the western region. Its engineering program was also recognized to be among the best in the nation among those that do not offer a doctoral degree.

Among those ranked as top public universities, Humboldt, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Jose and Stanislaus were included in the ranking’s Best Value list for western region.

Cal State East Bay was ranked as being the most ethnically diverse campus among regional universities along with 16 other CSUs, and San Francisco State ranked the sixth most ethnically diverse campus among national universities.

Northridge, Fullerton, San Jose and Sacramento placed in the top 10 for most number of transfer students. Nine other campuses were included in the top half of the ranking.

For more than three decades, the U.S News and World Report’s annual Best Colleges list has been one of the most closely-watched rankings of American higher education, helping prospective students and their families find the best academic value for their money.

The complete list, which divides the nation into four geographical regions – North, South, Midwest and West – compares institutions based on widely accepted indicators of excellence, such as student retention rates, graduation rates and strength of the faculty. The rankings assess nearly 1,400 colleges and universities on 15 different measures of academic quality.
