CSU Board of Trustees to Receive John W. Nason Award



March 12, 2018 — The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees will be honored with the prestigious John W. Nason Award for Board Leadership. Awarded annually by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB), the Nason award is presented to governing boards demonstrating exceptional leadership and initiative. The award is named for higher education leader John W. Nason, recognized for his work as chair of the National Japanese American Student Relocation Council and helping more than 4,000 interned students continue their college studies across the nation during World War II.

“The John Nason Award provides a unique opportunity to recognize college and university governing boards that have each addressed significant challenges, and have demonstrated innovative and collaborative leadership,” said AGB President Richard D. Legon. 

The CSU Board was selected for providing vital backing for Graduation Initiative 2025, launched by Chancellor Timothy P. White in 2015. Through the support of the board, this ambitious plan is increasing graduation rates and eliminating achievement gaps across all 23 CSU campuses - the university has reached all-time highs in graduation rates for first-time freshman and transfer students. The board’s ongoing leadership and advocacy will further bolster the impact of this university-wide effort.

“I am deeply proud of the collaborative work of trustees, students, faculty and staff that benefits California and ‘California’s university’ on a daily basis,” said Rebecca Eisen, chair of the CSU Board of Trustees. “The bold Graduation Initiative 2025 is illustrative of what we can accomplish when we combine our passion and talents. This wonderful recognition of our efforts is appreciated.”

This year five honorees were chosen from some 40 nominations illustrating the critical work of boards from both public and private institutions, statewide systems, and institutionally related foundations. Other honorees in addition to the CSU Board include the Agnes Scott College (GA) Board of Trustees, Augsburg University (MN) Board of Regents, Ohio University Board of Trustees, and Unity College (ME) Board of Trustees. 

All five boards will be honored at AGB’s National Conference being held in San Francisco on April 22-24, as well as at their individual board meetings later this spring.
