How to Apply to the Health Professions Scholars Initiative

The Health Professions Scholars Initiative (HPSI) welcomes applications from matriculated CSU students, both upper-division undergraduates and master's students, who plan to pursue research-focused doctoral degrees such as the PhD, DrPH, DNP, DSW, or AuD.​

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • A commitment to advancing equitable health outcomes and improving public health systems;
  • Interest in research, teaching, or leadership that contributes to the health professions; and
  • Motivation to address workforce and policy challenges impacting California's diverse populations.
  • Note: The HPSI is not intended for students pursuing professional practice doctorates such as MD, JD, DDS, or PharmD degrees.

Eligibility

All currently enrolled CSU students are eligible to apply.

Note: Current or previous Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholars are not eligible to re-apply.

Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled at a CSU campus during at least the fall 2026 term; and
  • Have a CSU faculty mentor available to guide them through their academic and professional development plan.

Program Benefits

Selected Health Professions Scholars receive up to $5,000 to support activities that strengthen their preparation for doctoral study, including:

  • Travel to visit doctoral-granting institutions or attend professional meetings;
  • Professional development expenses such as application or test fees, professional memberships, or minor research materials;
  • A fully funded summer research experience at a University of California or other major U.S. research university.

Application Components

Applications must be submitted online through Smartsheet and include:

  • Three short essays (300–600 words each) addressing the applicant's educational preparation, research interests, and contributions to advancing health research or service in California;
  • Transcripts (unofficial CSU, undergraduate, and, if applicable, community college);
  • A Proposed Student Budget (totaling $5,000) detailing intended uses;
  • A Letter of Recommendation from the applicant's CSU faculty mentor; and
  • A Collaborative Mentorship Plan outlining development activities and communication between student and mentor.
