Jai Sookprasert

Jai Sookprasert brings more than three decades of public policy and advocacy experience to the CO as senior adviser to the chancellor. He has in-depth experience on the state budget process and has enacted major legislative proposals and shaped education and labor policies at the state capitol.

As a young immigrant from Laos, Sookprasert grew up in the City of San Francisco, and became the first in his family to graduate from college. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in economics and his Master of Public Policy at University of California, Berkeley.

Before joining the CO in April 2021, Sookprasert was assistant director for governmental relations at the California School Employees Association (CSEA), where he led a team that advocated for more funding for public education and improved labor rights and pension security for school employees. In addition, Sookprasert advised the CSEA Board of Directors and the Executive Staff on developing strategic plans to organize and mobilize CSEA members and staff to win key campaigns for state level elections and initiatives.

He has previously served in various roles with the Assembly's Education and Appropriations committees, the state superintendent at the California Department of Education and the Legislative Analyst's Office.

Sookprasert has been recognized as a leader in his work and his community, having been appointed by the California State Senate to the No Child Left Behind commission and serving as founding board member of the Asian Pacific Youth Leadership Project to help students develop their leadership skills and pursue careers in public service.
