Description

Springboard into voice acting! Learn techniques for video games, animation, commercials, and more from successful voice-over professionals. You will also build your acting muscles with training in the Michael Chekhov acting technique, a movement-based approach that can be applied to any acting work, giving you skills that will stay with you for the rest of your career! Special celebrity guest Gabriel Romero (featured on Netflix, CBS, FX, PBS, Showtime, and more) will hold special workshops for students.

Who Should Take This Class

This class is ideal for experienced actors interested in broadening their professional skills and industry knowledge in voice acting and acting generally. Applicants should have at least some experience with live performance and have taken at least one acting class beyond the high school level. Movement training is beneficial but not required. Anyone with mobility limitations can be accommodated with advance notice. Applicants should be comfortable with trying new things, taking risks, working collaboratively, and receiving constructive feedback.

Personal Statement, Resumé, contact information for one professional or academic reference, link to Interview/Video Audition as a single PDF.

The personal statement should be limited to two, double-spaced pages and address professional goals, interest in this course content, and ability to adapt to new situations and overcome obstacles.

The resume should detail performance-related experience, including performances and coursework.

Provide the name, email address, and phone number of one professional or academic reference. The course coordinator will reach out to them to complete a recommendation form.

For the audition, submit a link to 30-90 seconds of a voice recording.

Course Coordinator

Katie Turner is a scholar-practitioner in theatre. This year marks her sixth year as a lecturer in Theatre at San Diego State University. She is also an experienced actor, director, producer, and playwright. In 2022, her play Iris and the Axe was awarded the “Outside the Box” award at the San Diego International Theatre Fringe Festival. Katie is currently the founding director of Turnkey Theatre, which specializes in creating new interactive and immersive productions in collaboration with emerging artists in San Diego and beyond.


Guest Artists

Nicole Franco

Nicole Franco is the owner, producer/director of Pinpoint Films and a professional actor and voiceover performer. She is a 25-year veteran of feature and award-winning short films, national broadcast advertising, documentaries, and all applications of digital marketing video. She is a voiceover coach, casting director, and the audio drama director of the “Jonathan Park Adventure” and “Adventum” audio series.

Jodina Scazzola

Jodina Scazzola’s career comprises radio and TV work including commercials, TV promos, video games, and more. Her clients include Nickelodeon, Home Depot, Star Trek Online, and PBS. Most recently Scazzola landed a lead role on Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game. She is also a commercial producer, copywriter, and coach.

Gabriel Romero

Gabriel Romero began acting professionally in musicals including Barnum and Something’s Afoot. He toured Colombia, El Salvador and Mexico with 24th Street Theatre, and served as master of ceremonies in their Day of the Dead celebration for more than 14 years. His acting credits include War of the Worlds with Los Angeles Philharmonic and Telemundo’s award-winning sitcom Los Beltrán.

Wilfred Paloma

Wilfred Paloma is a graduate of the MCIT Acting Studio and a member of the Actors" Equity Association. Paloma’s work and practice centers on diverse populations. He teaches and facilitates programs in arts integration, discrete arts, and arts enrichment that span K-12, and also runs community workshops.
