Contribution Highlights
- The university received several general bequests and bequest expectancies this past year. The largest was an anonymous bequest expectancy totaling $3,063,161 to be used for restricted purposes. Another anonymous donor provided a $ 1 million bequest expectancy establishing a scholarship endowment. Two others were from two people close to the university: Professor Emerita of Music Sharon Girard made a bequest of $1.5 million; alumna Dr. Mary MacWilliam made a bequest in the amount of $1,180,750. Both are for unrestricted purposes to be used where most needed by the university.
- The Howard Hughes Medical Institute awarded a $1.5 million four-year grant to support the undergraduate science education program. This is an important opportunity to engage all faculty in scientific teaching with special attention paid to the appropriate development of post doctorate students, ensuring that they can develop their research into applicable scholarship.
- The Robert A. Corrigan Endowed Chair in American Studies was established with a $1 million pledge from alumni George and Judith Marcus. This endowed chair also received pledges of $200,000 from CSU trustee and alumnus Dr. Kenneth Fong and $100,000 (with an initial $50,000 pledge payment) from Mrs. Bettye Poetz Ferguson. The endowment honors the legacy and leadership of former President Corrigan, who has a long and distinguished history of scholarship in the field. The American Studies Program itself is a cross-disciplinary program that offers students an opportunity to create an individualized major.
