Contribution Highlights
- The Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation committed $1.46 million to the expansion of the university's Mathematics Achievement Academies in Contra Costa County. The academies address the achievement gap by motivating youth in underserved populations to work toward and be prepared for a college education. The experience prepares students for coursework in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II and includes mentoring during the summer session and in the following school year by CSU East Bay students.
- The S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation committed $1.15 million in support of the university's Gateways Partnership, a regional "cradle to career education and workforce" alliance, established to improve skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) of Bay Area students from pre-school through college. The Gateways Partnership is composed of more than 30 partners from business, education, civic, nonprofit, and philanthropic organizations focused on children in preschool through college. It seeks to improve student success in math and science in each year of schooling with the aim of developing a robust "cradle-to-career" pipeline of students and graduates to fill the workforce needs of the region.
- Pharmaceutical and health care giant Bayer Corporation awarded a $540,000 grant for initiatives in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. The grant will be used by the university to establish the CSU East Bay Center for STEM Education that will focus on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. The center will enhance the role the university plays in regional and national education issues.
