2007-08 Annual Report on External Support to the CSU

System Highlights

  • The California State University mounted the largest Professional Science Masterís program in the nation with a $1.3 million grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The innovative graduate degree integrates science and mathematics education with business management skills preparing graduates to succeed in the nationís high-growth technology sectors.
  • Governor Schwarzenegger engaged university and military leaders to clear the pathway to higher education and economic opportunity for veterans exiting military service. Private support helped the California State University provide specialized outreach efforts and academic counseling to prepare veterans for careers in health and teaching professions.
  • The Stuart Foundation provided $180,000 for an initiative to implement strategies to increase the retention and graduation of former foster youth. The intent is to eliminate some of the barriers these students face in academic preparation, access to housing, medical services, and financial aid.
  • To improve both the diversity and numbers of Californiaís health care providers, the California Endowment partnered with the California State University to examine barriers to enrollment in health professional schools. The study will reveal how to improve educational practices in each of Californiaís public higher education segments.
