  • External support, a combination of philanthropic support and special revenue, reached $840.98 million in 2002-2003 despite a significant downturn in the stock market that affected personal, corporate and foundation giving.

  • Philanthropic support equaled 12 percent of the previous year's general fund allocation from the state of California, surpassing the university's fundraising goal by 2 percent.

  • Long Beach, San Diego and San Luis Obispo each exceeded $30 million in philanthropic support and were closely followed by Northridge at $24 million.

  • Giving from individuals surpassed $91 million, including $21 million from alumni.

  • Nearly 98,000 alumni have joined alumni associations as members and these members have contributed 38 percent of total dollars from alumni.

  • More parents made charitable gifts, increasing the total dollars raised from parents by 6.3 percent.
