External support, a combination of philanthropic support
and special revenue, reached $840.98 million in 2002-2003
despite a significant downturn in the stock market that
affected personal, corporate and foundation giving.
Philanthropic support equaled 12 percent of the previous
year's general fund allocation from the state of California,
surpassing the university's fundraising goal by 2 percent.
Long Beach, San Diego and San Luis Obispo each exceeded
$30 million in philanthropic support and were closely followed
by Northridge at $24 million.
Giving from individuals surpassed $91 million, including
$21 million from alumni.
Nearly 98,000 alumni have joined alumni associations
as members and these members have contributed 38 percent
of total dollars from alumni.
More parents made charitable gifts, increasing the total
dollars raised from parents by 6.3 percent.
