Math and Science Teacher Initiative

CSU East Bay

CSU East Bay has produced a new undergraduate pathway that leads to Single Subject Math and Science Credentials.  This new pathway is called the Bachelor’s Plus Early Pathway (BPEP) and allows students to earn their BA and their credential in four years plus two summers (those between the sophomore and junior and the junior and senior years.)  Students entering CSUEB as community college transfers begin their BPEP work immediately by attending a summer session.

As part of its new pathway to a single subject credential in math or science, CSU East Bay has also created a program on campus preparing Math and Science Teaching Assistants for local high schools. The program is for CSUEB mathematics and science majors interested in teaching careers.  These students are trained as high school tutors, screened to comply with the state’s security regulations, and placed in local high schools as teaching assistants, working with cooperating teachers.

CSU East Bay has a 70% community college transfer population and believes in the importance of actively establishing connections with neighboring community colleges. It is eventually working with ten community colleges in the Bay Area to establish BPEP Affiliate Programs on those campuses.  Community College Affiliate Scholars are identified through these programs. These promising mathematics and science students  are mentored and engage in high school tutoring with training and supervision. This effort is in collaboration with CSU East Bay students; they will participate in a range of activities together in preparation to become math and science teachers.
