What are the Requirements?

Resident Determination Date

To be classified a resident for tuition purposes, a student must show he/she has been a legal California resident for at least one year immediately prior to the Residence Determination Date. The Residence Determination Dates are as follows:

PHYSICAL PRESENCE

A student must be physically present in California at least one year prior to the Residence Determination Date to establish California residence.

INTENT TO REMAIN INDEFINITELY

A student must intend to remain in California one year prior to the Residence Determination Date to establish California residence. Intent to remain indefinitely in California can be determined only after a careful evaluation of all objective facts in a particular student’s situation.

Financial Independence

Any student applying for reclassification must prove themselves financially independent.

IMMIGRATION STATUS

Students must come to the United States with the intent to remain permanently to establish residence for tuition purposes. Students who enter the United States on F or J visas can NEVER establish residency for tuition purposes.
