An undergraduate major or campus is designated as impacted when the number of applications received during the initial filing period exceeds the number of available spaces. Such majors or campuses are authorized to use supplementary admission criteria to screen applications.

There are subtle, yet important, differences between major and campus impaction. Major impaction means that the number of applications from fully eligible students to a designated major on a CSU campus during the initial filing period far exceeds the number of spaces available in that major. However, students can still be admitted to the campus in an alternate major, or they may eventually be admitted to the over subscribed major if they meet the supplementary admission criteria. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo continues to be impacted in all majors.

Campus impaction (otherwise known as campuswide impaction) means that a campus has exhausted existing enrollment capacity in terms of the instructional resources and physical capacity of the campus, and because the campus receives more eligible applicants during the initial admission application filing period than can be accommodated, the campus must therefore restrict enrollment to the campus for a specific enrollment category (i.e. first-time freshmen). Currently, Fullerton, Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, San Diego, and Sonoma are designated as impacted CSU campuses.

Students interested in an impacted major or campus must apply for admission during the initial filing period of October through November 2008 for admission in fall 2009. Applications for admission to impacted majors and campuses are not accepted after the initial filing period. Additionally, by utilizing CSUMentor (the preferred method for applying to all CSU campuses) applicants can easily complete multiple applications for multiple campuses and submit them for consideration.

CSUMentor allows for re-routing to an alternate campus, when a timely application from a CSU minimally qualified applicant cannot be accommodated, filing of additional applications may be unnecessary. However, the system will not re-route applications to other impacted campuses or majors or to campuses that have already closed to applicants.

Consideration for admission to any impacted major or campus is contingent on first meeting the regular admission requirements for the CSU. Supplementary admission criteria are used to screen all applicants for admission to impacted majors including those students currently enrolled at the campus in other majors and seeking access to the impacted major. Transfer students have the same priority as native students in being admitted to an impacted major. They must also meet the same supplemental admission criteria as native students.

In most cases, CSU-eligible first-time freshmen and lower division transfer applicants who apply for admission to impacted majors during the initial filing period (October or November for the fall term, June for the winter quarter, or August for spring term) may be admitted to the campus in a "pre-major" status. In this status, the student must complete the lower division (freshman and sophomore level) courses established as prerequisites for admission to the impacted major. They must also complete all other supplemental admission criteria required for admission to the impacted major (Note: Enrollment of lower division transfer applicants is restricted at CSU campuses, and will be allowed only if a specific campus needs additional students to meet enrollment targets).

* Special Note on Nursing Majors:

The Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing may be earned by completing all general education requirements and the clinical portion of the nursing curriculum at the CSU campus, or students may complete an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) at a California Community College and then enroll in a CSU nursing major. Each route leads to preparation for nursing licensure (the RN) and the baccalaureate degree (the BS degree). Nineteen CSU campuses offer the ADN to BSN major and are open to CSU-eligible applicants. These majors are not impacted, and the campuses will continue to accept CSU-eligible transfer applicants, while spaces are available.

Fifteen CSU campuses offer the basic nursing major that includes the clinical training portion of the nursing education. The basic nursing major is impacted at all CSU campuses.

Impacted Campus Information (alphabetical order)

California State University, Fullerton is an impacted campus at the first-time freshman level and will utilize supplemental admission criteria to admit first-time freshmen to the campus. All first-time freshman applicants must apply during the initial admission application-filing period (October 1 through November 30 for fall) to be considered for admission. SAT or ACT scores are required regardless of GPA and must be received by CSU Fullerton no later than January 2008. CSU eligible first-time freshman applicants that graduate from high schools in a CSU Fullerton-defined local area will be admitted based on CSU systemwide eligibility criteria. CSU eligible first-time freshman applicants who graduate from schools outside of the CSU Fullerton-defined local area will be "rank ordered" by eligibility index and admission offers will be made in descending order of eligibility index totals until the freshman class is full. Approximately ten (10) percent of the freshman class may be admitted based on an eligibility index and additional characteristics including special talents, first generation college status, socioeconomic factors, and indications of overcoming educational obstacles. Cal State Fullerton is also "impacted" for pre-nursing program.

California State University, Long Beach
First time freshmen: California State University, Long Beach utilizes supplemental criteria to admit first-time freshmen. All first-time freshman applicants must apply during the initial filing period and must submit an SAT or ACT score regardless of their high school grade point average. The SAT or ACT must be taken no later than December 2008. An eligibility index using self-reported SAT or ACT score and a high school grade point average for sophomore and junior years will be calculated for all first-time freshmen. CSULB will continue to admit all fully CSU eligible first time freshman applicants that graduate from high schools in a CSULB-defined local service area on the basis of CSU admission eligibility criteria. Other applicants will be rank ordered by eligibility index. The academic characteristics of the freshman applicant pool will determine the eligibility index cut-off. All subject matter requirements must be complete, in progress, or planned prior to high school graduation. Subject matter requirements must be met with a C or better and may not be completed during the summer term immediately preceding fall admission. Approximately five percent of the freshman class will be admitted based on an eligibility index and additional characteristics. These include socioeconomic or educational factors, space availability in a unique majors or major, indications of overcoming educational obstacles, or exceptional talents.

Lower division transfers: CSULB does not accept applications from lower division transfer students.

Upper division transfers: CSULB is impacted for many of its upper-division transfer programs and expects to utilize supplemental criteria for upper-division transfer admission. Upper-division transfer students who last attended Long Beach City College and completed 30 or more transferable units there, who apply during the initial filing period, and who meet CSU systemwide admission eligibility criteria by the end of the spring semester will be admitted. Transfer Grade Point Average will be the principal component of the supplementary criteria. Upper-division transfer students who live outside of the CSULB local area (Long Beach City College District) and who meet CSU systemwide admission eligibility criteria by the end of the spring semester, will be ranked according to grade point average, and admitted until enrollment capacity has been reached. All upper-division transfer applicants must apply to a specific major and are strongly encouraged to identify an alternate major. For those students seeking admission to an impacted majors or major, CSULB will make a decision on admission to the impacted majors prior to admission to the University. Students who are not admitted to the impacted major of their choice will be asked to select another major if the wish to attend CSULB.

Second baccalaureate applicants: CSULB will admit qualified applicants seeking a second baccalaureate to selected majors in Engineering, Science, Mathematics, Nursing, Foreign Languages, Spanish Translation, and other areas of critical need. Second baccalaureate applicants will not be admitted to impacted majors. For more details, please check the campus website at www.csulb.edu.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is impacted for first-time freshman applicants and expects to utilize supplemental admission criteria for admission of first-time freshman applicants to the campus. All first-time freshman applicants must apply during the initial admission application-filing period (October 1 through November 30 for fall) to be considered for admission. SAT or ACT scores are required regardless of GPA and must be received by Cal Poly Pomona no later than January. All CSU subject matter requirements must be complete, in progress, or planned for completion with grades of "C" or better prior to high school graduation, and may not be completed during the summer term immediately preceding fall admission. CSU eligible first-time freshman applicants that graduate from high schools in a Cal Poly Pomona-defined local area will be admitted based on CSU systemwide eligibility criteria. CSU eligible first-time freshman applicants who graduate from schools outside of the Cal Poly Pomona-defined local area will be "rank ordered" by eligibility index and admission offers will be made in descending order of eligibility index totals until the freshman class is full. A small percentage of the freshman class will be admitted based on an eligibility index and additional characteristics including special talents, first generation college status, socioeconomic factors, and indications of overcoming educational obstacles.

San Diego State University is an impacted campus at the first-time freshman level and for most upper-division transfer programs. SDSU receives more CSU qualified applications than can be accommodated by the campus. Enrollment targets are established for first-time freshmen and upper-division transfers. As the number of applications in any of the categories exceeds the number that can be accommodated, supplemental criteria are utilized to admit students. San Diego State University uses campus and major impaction for admission to the campus and major impaction for entry to a number of high demand majors. More specific information is available on SDSU's website (www.sdsu.edu).

First-time freshmen: At the first-time freshman level, 80 percent of the class will be selected on the basis of an eligibility index higher than that required for regular CSU admission. That eligibility index number may vary from year to year based on the size and academic preparation of the first-time freshman applicant pool. The remaining 20 percent of the class will be selected on the basis of other characteristics such as CSU-eligible local entitlemen, socio-economic or education factors, space availability in a major, exceptional talents, special perspectives or talents that would further enrich the educational experience of the campus community.

Lower-division transfers: SDSU accepts no lower-division transfer applicants.

Upper-division transfers: Transfer students will be admitted by major. Applicants not meeting the following requirements will be ranked based on how closely they meet the criteria and considered for admission on a space available basis.

  • Complete 60 transferable semester units by the end of spring 2009.
  • Complete all lower-division General Education (GE) courses by the end of spring 2008. GE requirements in written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, and mathematics must be completed with a "C" or higher in each course.
  • By the end of spring 2009, complete all preparation for the major courses that are articulated or approved as equivalent (see Transfer Admission Planner at: www.sdsu.edu/tap) and offered at the college(s) attended in the year prior to transfer. Some impacted majors have specific grade expectations for individual courses or combination of courses that must be met.
  • Local area and outside-the-local area applicants must meet the GPA required for impacted majors. SDSU's local area includes community colleges in San Diego County that are located south of Highway 56 and community colleges in Imperial County.
  • Outside-the-local area applicants will also be selected based on a GPA ranking that may be higher than the impacted major GPA.
  • All applicants must meet the required GPA at the time of application, and they must maintain the GPA through the end of spring 2009.

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo continues to receive more CSU qualified applications than can be accommodated in all majors. San Luis Obispo has adopted a Multi Criteria Admission (MCA) process to determine eligibility for undergraduate admission. Information on the MCA process is provided to all San Luis Obispo applicants.

Freshman applicants are evaluated on the basis of grade point average in college preparatory courses, overall GPA, completion of additional college preparatory courses, test scores, extracurricular activities, and major-related work experience.

Transfer candidates are evaluated on the basis of major-specific courses completed, general education courses completed, grade point average, work experience, and extracurricular activities. The MCA process considers nonacademic factors that contribute to campus diversity. Students may also be considered for admission based on special talents, interests, or experiences.

All applicants, regardless of class level, are required to meet supplementary criteria. First-time freshman applicants for the fall term are urged to take the SAT or ACT at either the October or November test administration.

Applicants offered conditional admission must submit final transcripts, test scores, and other materials required to complete the application portfolio and confirm their intent to enroll by submitting a Student Intent to Enroll (SIR) form. Completed portfolios are reviewed to verify admission eligibility and, at that time, applicants are notified of formal admission to the university.

Sonoma State University is impacted for for first-time freshmen and transfers to several programs. Applications for freshmen and impacted majors must be submitted prior to November 30.

Other CSU campuses with special requirements:

California Maritime Academy employs alternative admission practices to select students for admission to its unique majors. The admission evaluation is based on several factors including academic performance, strength of college preparation coursework, extracurricular activities, character, motivation, and, to some extent, college entrance examination scores.

Admission criteria may also include those required by the U.S. Coast Guard for maritime licensing physical requirements, such as physical examination, a record free of criminal offenses, and U.S. citizenship.

Apparel Design and Merchandising

San Francisco: Fall

Admission to the Apparel Design and Merchandising major is limited to students at the upper division level.  Requirements for admission for all students include:

  • Completion of a minimum of 60 transferable semester units with an overall grade point average of 2.50.
  • Completion of the following prerequisite courses or their equivalents with a minimum grade of “C”:  ADM 260, ADM 265, ECON 305 (or ECON 100 and ECON 101), ID 240, PSYCH 200, and a college level drawing class.
  • Submit the Supplemental Program Application available at SFSU Consumer and Family Studies/Dietetics (click on Program Applications) between January 2 and February 1, 2009. 
  • Applicants are selected for available spaces based on completion of prerequisites, GPA, experience in the field, professional goals, drawing skills, writing skills, and presentation.

Architecture

Pomona: Fall only

Admission of first-time freshmen and lower-division students with fewer than 18 transferable quarter units will be based on the eligibility index.

Admission of students with 18 or more transferable quarter units will be based on overall GPA in transferable courses. Minimum advanced standing prerequisites for ARC 103 or second year: 8-quarter units of architecture design courses, English 104 and 105, and Mathematics 106.

Minimum advanced standing prerequisites for ARC 203 or third year: 24 quarter units of architecture design courses, English 104 and 105, Math 106, and Physics 121 and 122 (or equivalent); at least one course in the history of architecture must be completed by the end of spring term.

After determination of eligibility, portfolio will be requested and interviewed for placement in design course(s).

October 1 - November 30 filing period for the following fall (some who apply during this period, based upon evaluation of transcripts and portfolio, will be admitted to the preceding summer in advanced standing).

March 1-Transcripts must be on file in the Admissions Office.

Art

Long Beach (Bachelor of Fine Arts)

To be eligible for admission to a Bachelor of the Fine Arts (B.F.A.) program, applicants must demonstrate the following prior to the semester for which the application is submitted:

  • Applicants must have met requirements for admission to the university as a freshman or transfer student.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 60 semester units of baccalaureate-level work applicable toward a degree at CSULB.
  • Applicants must provide a portfolio of their creative work to the CSULB Department of Art. Your portfolio can be submitted before you enter the Department, but it is highly suggested that students interested in the B.F.A. programs enter the university as a Studio Art major, take between six to nine upper division units in the area of specialization, and then submit a portfolio. By doing so you will become acquainted with the Department and the specific requirements for our portfolio review. You only have two chances to apply for a B.F.A. program. By applying early you may use one of your chances before you are ready.
Long Beach (Option in Studio Art under the Bachelor of Arts)

To be eligible for admission to the Option in Studio Art under the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), applicants must demonstrate the following prior to the semester for which the application is submitted:

  • Applicants must have met requirements for admission to the university as a freshman or transfer student.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 60 semester units of baccalaureate-level work applicable toward a CSULB degree prior to the term for which the application is submitted.
  • Eligible applicants will be selected for admission on a space-available basis based on cumulative grade point average.
San Diego: Fall

  • Complete with a minimum GPA of 2.7 and a grade of C or higher in each: Biology 201A, 201B, and 215; Chemistry 200, 201, and 231; Math 121 and 122; and Physics 180A, 180B, 182A, and 182B or their equivalents. These courses cannot be taken for Credit/No Credit (Cr/NC).
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.60 or higher.

Students choosing an emphasis in bioengineering have a different set of courses to complete in the preparation for the major. To be admitted to the major, bioengineering students must complete Biology 201A, 201B; Chemistry 200, 201,231; Mathematics 150,151; and Physics 195,196,197 with at least a "C" in each course; have a cumulative GPA of 2.70 or higher or their equivalent(s) of these courses. Students may not elect credit/no credit grading for coursework needed to satisfy preparation for the major requirements.

San Luis Obispo: All terms

Business AdministrationLong Beach: Fall and Spring

  • To be eligible for admission to the majors in Business Administration, applicants must have met requirements for admission to the university as a freshman or transfer student. Applicants must have completed 60 units applicable toward a CSULB degree prior to the term for which the application is submitted. The number of applicants who can be admitted is limited by space availability.
  • Eligible applicants will be selected for admission based on cumulative grade point average.
  • Admitted students must demonstrate computer literacy by the end of their first semester or they will be dropped from the major. Computer literacy may be demonstrated by a passing score (70 percent) on the CBA Computer Proficiency Examination, or completion with credit of IS 233 (Introduction to Computer Systems and Applications) or completion with credit of IS 240 (Management Information Systems) or completion of a transfer course equivalent to IS 233 or 240 with a grade of C or better.
Northridge: Fall and Spring (Accountancy & Finance, and Option in Financial Services)

Admission to the Accountancy major is limited to students at the upper division level. Requirements for admission for all students include:

  • Completion of a minimum of 60 units of college work (junior class standing). For transfer student, the units must be CSU transferable.
  • Completion of ACCT 220 and BUS 105, or their equivalents, with a grade of "B" or higher in each.
  • Completion of ECON 160, ECON 161, COMP 100, ACCT 230, SOM 120, BLAW 280, and MATH 102, or their equivalents, with a grade of "C" or higher in each. Applicants shall be ranked by grade point average and admitted to the major until the available openings are filled. Available openings shall be dependent upon the total capacity for that semester.

Admission to the Finance major and Option in Financial Services is limited to students at the upper division level. Requirements for admission for all students include:

  • Completion of a minimum of 60 units of college work (junior class standing) and the units must be CSU transferable.
  • Completion of the four basic sugjects of general education.
  • .
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.5 in all college work completed.
San Diego: Fall
  • To advance to an upper-division major, students must have completed 60 transferable semester units and nine prerequisite courses (accounting majors must complete eight prerequisite courses).
  • In addition, the applicant must have earned at least a cumulative GPA of at least 2.90 in all college work.
  • Completion of the following courses with a C or higher in each: Accounting 201 and 202; Finance 240; IDS 180 and 290 (Information Decision Systems 290 is not required for the accounting major); Economics 101 and 102; Mathematics 120; and either Statistics 119 or Economics 201, or their equivalents. These courses may not be taken for Credit/No Credit (Cr/NC).

San Luis Obispo: All terms

  • Completion of 60 semester-units of baccalaureate-level coursework applicable toward a degree at CSUSM
  • Completion of coursework equivalent to the Lower-Division Pre-Business Core with a minimum grade of C (2.0) in each course, and a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the entire core: ACCT 203 - Survey of Accounting Information, ECON 250 - Introduction to Economics, MATH 132 - Survey of Calculus, PSYC 100 - Introduction to Psychology, SOC 101 - Introduction to Sociology, or GESS 101 and 102 - Order and Change: Multiple Perspectives. Note that completion of the Pre-Business Core is a prerequisite for all upper-division courses offered in the College of Business Administration.
  • Students who began their most recent period of continuous enrollment during the fall 2006 term or later must complete the following prerequisite courses with a grade of at least a "C" in each and a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the entire communications core or its equivalent: Accounting 201, 202, Business 202, 203, Economics 201, 202, Mathematics 132 & Psychology 100 or Sociology 101.
  • Applicants meeting the first two criteria will be rank-ordered by the cumulative GPA in the Lower Division Pre-Business Core.

Child Development

San Diego: Fall
  • Complete with a grade of C or higher: Child and Family Development 135, 270, 270L (1 unit), 272, and 275; Biology 100; Psychology 101; Sociology 101; and Psychology 270 and 271 (or Sociology 201)or the equivalent(s) of these courses. These courses cannot be taken for Credit/No Credit (Cr/NC).
  • Complete a minimum of 45 baccalaureate level semester units (a minimum of 60 semester units are required for all transfer applicants).
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.40 or higher.

  • Complete the following courses with a C or better and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in these courses: Journalism and Media Studies 200, 220; Economics 101; and Political Science 101 and 102 or the equivalent(s) of these courses. These courses cannot be taken for Credit/No Credit (Cr/NC).
  • Pass the Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation (GSP) test.

Communication

San Diego: Fall
  • Complete a minimum of 45 baccalaureate level semester units and a maximum of 90 semester units. (A minimum 60 units are required for all transfer applicants.)
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Complete the general education oral communication requirement with a C or higher. This course cannot be taken for credit/no Credit (Cc/NC).
  • Complete the following courses with a C or higher and a GPA of 2.75 in these courses: six units selected from Communication 160, 201 or 204 or six units from among the equivalents of these courses. These courses cannot be taken for Credit/No Credit (Cr/NC).

Communication (with a Specialization in Media Studies)

San Diego: Fall
  • Complete with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and a grade of C or higher: Journalism and Media Studies 200 and nine units selected from Economics 101, 102, Political Science 101, 102, Psychology 101, Sociology 101, Television, Film and New Media Production 160.   • To be eligible for admission to the major in Criminal Justice, applicants must have met requirements for admission to the university as a freshman or transfer student.
  • The number of applicants who can be admitted is limited by space availability. Eligible applicants will be selected for admission for admission based on cumulative GPA of 2.4.
  • At least 30 units applicable to a CSULB degree-must have been completed prior to the term for which an application for admission is submitted.
San Diego: Fall

  • Complete a minimum of 60 transferable semester units.
  • Complete with a C or higher: Criminal Justice Administration 200, Political Science 102, Sociology 101 and 150 or the equivalent(s)of these courses, and a 3-unit course in elementary statistics. These courses cannot be taken for Credit/No Credit (Cr/NC).
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.60 or higher.
  • Students not meeting the minimum GPA requirement may petition for special consideration.

Sonoma: Fall

  • At this time, the Criminology & Criminal Justice Studies department has open admission for Fall 2009.  If the department has to use supplementary criteria at a future time, it will be 2.75 gpa.

Economics

San Diego: Fall

  • Complete with a grade of C or higher: Economics 101, 102; Accountancy 201; Economics 201 or Statistics 119 or 250; one course selected from Mathematics 120, 121, or 150; and Information and Decision Systems 180, or Sociology 200 C, and two courses from Sociology 200A, 200B or 200D or the equivalents of these courses. These courses cannot be taken for Credit/No Credit (Cr/NC), unless only offered for Cr/NC.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.40 or higher.
  • To be admitted to the Emphasis in International Economics (major code 22042), students must, in addition to satisfying the criteria above, also satisfy the foreign language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences.
San Luis Obispo: All terms

Long Beach (Option in Radiation Therapy Technology): Fall

To be eligible for admission to the major in the Health Science Option in Radiation Therapy Technology, applicants must demonstrate the following prior to the semester for which the application is submitted:

  • Applicants must have met requirements for admission to the university as a freshman or transfer student.
  • Applicants must have completed the following prerequisite courses, each with a grade of C or better: BIOL 200, 207, and 208; MICR 101; H SC 200; MATH 119A; PHYS 100A and B; I S 233; and ENGL 102 or the equivalents of these courses (15 of these 35 units may be double-counted as General Education).
  • Applicants must have completed a 40-hour observation period in a department of radiation therapy and an observation packet.
  • Applicants must submit a supplemental application to the department by February 1 for the fall semester. The application must be accompanied by: 3 letters of recommendation (at least one from a radiation therapist at the observation site noted below, and the others from either employers or instructors), a written personal statement, a summary of academic and work history, and documentation of the availability of transportation to clinical sites for the required internship.
  • Applicants must participate in an interview with the Radiation Therapy Career Advisement Committee. The number of applicants who can be admitted is limited by space availability.
  • Eligible applicants will be selected for admission on a space-available basis according to the faculty's judgment of their ability to succeed in the program.
San Diego: Health Science: Fall
  • Have completed all lower division public health courses required for the major (Public Health 101, 290, and 294). These courses cannot be taken for Credit/No Credit (Cr/NC).
  • Receive a grade of B or higher in Public Health 101 and 290.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.60 or higher.
  • Submit a written statement outlining career goals and personal motivation for entering the public health field.

Complete INTD 100 or be enrolled in the course when the supplemental application is submitted.

Applicants must submit a portfolio for a faculty-juried portfolio review.
Applicants will be ranked based on cumulative GPA and the results of the juried portfolio review.


San Francisco: Fall

Admission to the Interior Design major is limited to students at the upper division level. Requirements for admission for all students include:

  • Completion of a minimum of 60 transferable semester units with an overall grade point average of 2.50.
  • Completion of the following prerequisite courses or their equivalents with a minimum grade of “C”:  ADM 260, ID 240, ID 242, a college level drawing class and a passing grade on the qualifying design project.
  • Submit the Supplemental Program Application available at www.sfsu.edu/~cfsd/ (click on Program Applications) between January 2 and February 1, 2009.

Applicants are selected for available spaces based on qualifying design project, completion of prerequisites, GPA, experience in the field, professional goals, writing skills, and presentation.

Journalism

San Diego : Fall

  • Complete with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and a grade of C or higher: Journalism and Media Studies 200, 220, Economics 101, Political Science 101, 102. These courses cannot be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC).
  • Achieve a passing score on the Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation test by the third attempt.
  • Complete a minimum of 45 baccalaureate level semester units. A maximum of 90 semester units is recommended. (A minimum of 60 units is required for all transfer applicants.)
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

  • Applicants must file a supplemental application obtained from the Curriculum Director.
  • Complete prerequisite courses in PHYAN 64; Health Science 48; KINES 38; and one semester or 200 hours (KINES 43)or the equivalents of any or all of these working as a student athletic trainer under the supervision of an NATA certified athletic trainer.
  • Earn an overall GPA of 2.50 with a 3.00 in the prerequisite courses.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation; one must be from an NATA Certified Athletic Trainer.

Long Beach (Kinesiology: Option in Athletic Training):Fall and Spring

To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology, Option in Athletic Training, applicants must demonstrate the following prior to the semester for which the application is submitted:

  • Applicants must have met requirements for admission to the university as a freshman or transfer student.
  • Applicants must have completed the following prerequisite courses, each with a grade of "C" or better: BIOL 207, BIOL 208, and PSY 100. Applicants must have completed KPE 207 (Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries) with a grade of "B" or better or the equivalents of these courses.

  • Applicants must have completed a minimum of 150 hours of athletic training experience. At least 100 of these hours must be attained by participation in a traditional athletic training setting under the supervision of a NATABOC-certified athletic trainer. A maximum of 50 of these hours may be attained in an allied clinical setting, such as sports medicine clinics, summer sports camps, sports performance facilities, hospital facilities, or dance performance centers.
  • Applicants must submit a supplemental application to the CSULB Department of Kinesiology by February 1 for the fall semester or by October 1 for the spring semester. The supplemental application is available from the KPE Department Office or the KPE web site (www.csulb.edu/kpe).

  • Transfers and CSUDH students must: File an application for an option's clinical year through the Department of Clinical Sciences. Submit three letters of recommendation. Present a statement of physical fitness (including measles vaccination). Complete all lower-division GE courses. Complete the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR).

In addition to admission to CSUB, successful applicants must be meeting the following minima:

  • Completion of the following eight prerequisite courses (CSUB) or their equivalents: English 110, Chemistry 150 or Chemistry 203, Biology 250, Communication 108, Philosophy 102, Mathematics 140, Biology 255, 256 and Biology 260.
  • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.80 or better in the eight "pre-requisite"courses in order to be eligible for consideration for entry into the nursing program.
  • Special consideration is provided for certain demonstrable bilingual proficiency, educational disadvantage, residence in countries historically served by CSUB, healthcare, professional and community service.

Student is accepted by the University - Required and transfer courses must be evaluated prior to application to Nursing Program - Preferred.

Chico: Fall and Spring

  • CSU Chico students and transfer applicants must earn a minimum of C-in prerequisite courses.

  • Five of the seven prerequisite courses or their equivalent(s) must have been completed at the time the supplemental nursing application is filed.
  • All applicants must submit SAT or ACT scores.
  • An overall college GPA of 2.50 is required.


  • Applicants will be selected on the basis of academic performance in prerequisite courses, verbal ability, foreign language proficiency, health-related experience, and biographical and educational background.

East Bay: Fall only

The following supplemental admission criteria will be utilized for students applying to the Basic/Generic Nursing Program at CSU East Bay:

GPA 50 points maximum for GPA in prerequisite courses with the following conditions:
  • An overall GPA of at least 2.75 based on the 90 most recent quarter units.
  • At least two science and two non-science prerequisite courses must be completed by March 1 when clinical nursing applications and supporting documents must be submitted.


  • A GPA of at least 2.75 in nursing prerequisite science courses and a minimum grade of C in all prerequisites.
  • Grades must be documented by March 31 of the calendar year in which the applicant seeks admission.
  • Each repetition of prerequisite courses within a 7-year period will result in a deduction of 5 points.
Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) 40 points maximum for overall score on TEAS.

Optional Criteria
  • 5 points for speaking and writing proficiency in English and one other language. Applicant must provide a voucher for non-English language and score 50th percentile on the English portion of the TEAS.
  • 5 points for the equivalent of at least six months full-time employments in a health care setting providing direct patient care.

Fresno: Fall and Spring

  • First-time freshman applicants are not considered but may enroll as pre-nursing, undeclared, or alternate majors.
  • To apply to the nursing major, CSU Fresno and transfer applicants must complete two prerequisite science courses and two other prerequisite courses by the end of fall 2007 and will have completed all nine by the end of spring 2008 or their equivalents.
  • GPA of 3.00 or above is required in prerequisite courses of inorganic chemistry, microbiology, human anatomy with lab and human physiology with lab, nutrition or dietetics, introductory psychology, English composition, speech communication, and introductory sociology or cultural anthropology.
  • A maximum of two prerequisite courses may be repeated unless the Nursing Department chairperson grants special permission.
  • Qualified applicants meeting minimum requirements for selection will be ranked on the following factors and admitted as enrollment quotas allow-GPA in nine prerequisite courses and prerequisites completed without repetition.
  • May 1-Deadline for course completion with supportive documents.

Humboldt: Fall only

  • Completion of prerequisite coursework with a minimum grade of C in each of the following or their equivalent(s): Chem 105 and 106; Zoo 270; Psch 104; Soc 104; and H. Ed. 231.
  • Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of academic performance in prerequisite courses, SAT /ACT scores, health-related experience, and foreign language competency.
  • Consideration given to veterans and individuals with special skills.
  • Admission to the nursing program limited to California residents for tuition purposes.
Long Beach: Fall and Spring

To be eligible for admission to the Nursing (Basic), applicants must demonstrate the following prior to the semester for which the application is submitted:

  • Applicants must have met requirements for admission to the university as a freshman or transfer student.
  • Applicants must have completed the following pre-requisite courses or their equivalent(s), each with a minimum grade of "C": BIOL 207 and 208; MICR 200; CHEM 202; PSY 100; and SOC 100.
  • Applicants must submit a supplemental application to the department by February 1 for the fall semester or by September 15 for the spring semester.
  • Applicants must complete a test that assesses ability for logical thinking and problem solving (offered by the department at the start of each semester) before their application will be considered.
  • Each applicant must schedule a personal interview with a designated member of the nursing faculty.
  • Applicants must earn a minimum GPA of 2.5 in all Science and General Education pre-requisite courses.
  • Applicants must have completed CSU General Education categories A & B.4 using courses selected from a list provided by the CSULB Nursing Dept. (see www.csulb.edu).

The number of applicants who can be admitted is limited by space availability. Eligible applicants will be selected for admission on a space-available basis according to the faculty's judgment of their ability to succeed in the program. Students provisionally admitted to the upper-division major on the basis of the provisions noted above must complete CHEM 302 (Survey of Organic Chemistry) with a passing grade no later than the end of their first semester in the major, or they will be dropped from the major.

Los Angeles: Fall only
  • Applicants to the basic nursing program must file a supplementary application with the Department of Nursing.
  • November 30-Deadline for university and supplemental nursing application for fall.
  • March 25-Applicants must have completed the following courses with minimum grade of C in each and an overall GPA of 3.00 for these courses: Chemistry 151; Biology 200A and 200B; English 101; Psychology 150 or their equivalents; and a critical thinking course that meets the General Education-Breadth requirement.
  • June 15-Microbiology 201 and 202 and Speech 150 or their equivalents must be completed with a minimum grade of C.
  • Applicants will be accepted on the basis of points earned in the supplementary criteria of GPA in the prerequisite courses, cumulative GPA, scores earned in the standardize Assessment Technologies Incorporated (ATI) Test of Essential Academic Skills, previous education or work experience, and interview.
Sacramento: Fall and Spring
  • Applicants must meet the CSU admission requirements applicable to their class level (i.e. lower division or upper division transfer. Lower division transfers will be admitted only in cases where additional students are needed to meet university enrollment targets).
  • Applicants must submit a clinical nursing application and the test results of the "Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)". A minimum score of at least 75% must be earned on the TEAS.
  • Applicants must complete the following eight prerequisite courses with grades of "C" or higher: English Composition, Oral Communication, Critical Thinking, Quantitative Reasoning, Anatomy with a lab, Physiology with a lab, Microbiology with a lab, and Organic Chemistry wit a lab. The combined GPA calculation for the eight prerequisite courses must be at least 3.0 at the time of application.
  • An applicant may have two science prerequisites and two non-science prerequisites in progress at the time of application to the program.
  • The applicant must have an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 based on the applicant's 30 most recent graded semester units; any of the prerequisite courses taken outside of the 30 most recent graded semester units will be included in the overall GPA calculation.
  • If the applicant has completed less than 30 semester units and will have complete all eight prerequisite courses, the applicant must have an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 including the prerequisite courses.
  • Appropriate bilingual skills, including American Sign Language, multicultural work will be considered experience in a health-related setting, and disadvantaged background will be considered.

San Bernardino: Fall and Spring
  • Applicants to the nursing program must file a supplementary application with the Department of Nursing and apply for admission to the university. University admission should be completed at least one quarter before student starts nursing program.
  • Applicants must complete prerequisite and support courses with individual grades of C or better and a minimum 2.50 GPA. Prerequisite courses are: Biology 220, 223, and 224; Chemistry 205 and 208; English 101; Communication 120 or their equivalents; and General Education-Breadth courses in critical thinking and mathematics.
  • Applicants must complete the ATI-TEAS pre-admission examination.
  • Applicants will be selected primarily in the basis of academic performance.
  • Additional supplemental requirements include health care experience, second language competence and local service area residency.
  • Outstanding high school students may be offered early admission to the nursing major prior to completion of one term in college. Criteria are: a high school GPA of 3.50 in academic courses and a total of 1100 on the SAT, or eligibility for the CSU Honors Program.
  • Advanced Placement is available to registered nurses (RNs) and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) that wish to pursue a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) degree.
  • Nonresident students cannot be accommodated.

San Diego: Fall and Spring
  • First-time freshmen must have completed one year of high school college preparatory courses in advanced algebra, biology, and chemistry with laboratory. Transfer students must have completed the same requirements or equivalent college-level courses.
  • Complete with a minimum GPA of 2.50: Biology 100, 210, 212, 261 (biology 210, 212, and 261 must total 12 semester units with a minimum grade of B- in each course); Chemistry 102*, Communication 103, Psychology 101, Sociology 101. These courses cannot be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC). The Test of Essential Academic Skills (T.E.A.S.) must be taken with a minimum of 71% achieved (test may be taken up to three times with the highest score counting for points).
  • Show evidence of 60 hours of volunteer/paid health care experience working directly with ill patients.
  • For fall admission, submit the Nursing supplemental application by November 30.
  • For spring admission, submit the Nursing supplemental application by August 31.
  • An individual interview may be required.
  • Completion of Chemistry 100 and 130 is also accepted as a substitute for Chemistry 102.
San Francisco: Fall only
  • Applicants to nursing must apply during the initial filing period, October 1 - November 30, for the subsequent fall semester.
  • To be admitted to the nursing major, applicants must have earned a minimum GPA of 2.8 in the last 60 semester units (90 quarter units).
  • Applicants must have completed the following prerequisites with a minimum grade of C or higher in each: human anatomy with lab, physiology with a lab, chemistry with lab, the first level of English composition, general psychology, nutrition, microbiology with lab; and a statistics course to meet the quantitative reasoning requirement in general education. Grades of C- are not accepted.
  • Applicants selected on the basis of academic performance in prerequisite courses, as well as optional supplementary criteria including foreign language proficiency, multicultural/volunteer work, under representation in nursing, and health related work or volunteer experience.
San Jose: Fall and Spring
  • Complete with a grade of "C" or better BIO 65, BIO 66, and MICRO 20 or their approved equivalents within five years of establishing eligibility.
  • Have a minimum Prerequisite Composite GPA of 2.75 in the prerequisite courses: BIO 65, 66; MICRO 20; ENGL 1A; and PSYCH 1 or the equivalent(s) of these SJSU courses.
  • Students will be rank ordered in descending order of Prerequisite Composite GPAs starting at 4.0.
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or higher using the 30 most recent graded semester units.
  • Students will be rank ordered in descending order of GPAs starting at 4.0, and priority will be given to students with the highest GPAs. If a prerequisite course is repeated, the first and second grades will be included in the calculation of the overall GPA.
  • The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) will be required for Admission. Priority will be given to students with the highest test scores and ranked in descending order.
San Marcos:
  • Applicants will meet CSU minimum admissions students as either freshmen or transfer.
  • Applicants will have earned a GPA of at least 2.75 in the following courses or their equivalents: Biology 160, 175, 176, CHEM 100/100L, GEO 102, GEW 101 and College Algebra or a CSU GE course in B.4 which is more advanced than MATH 115.
  • Selection for available spaces will be made on the basis of grade point average (GPA) in the pre-nursing core as well as the applicants overall GPA, English proficiency based on TEAS, Proficiency in Spanish (optional), previous training and/or work experience.
  • Preference will be provided to otherwise competitive applicants, who are residents of CSUSM "local area".

Sonoma: Fall only

High school applicants to "pre-nursing" major must meet the following criteria:

  • Eligibility index of 3700
  • Completion of two semesters each of high school biology and chemistry including laboratories with a grade of B or higher.
  • Overall high school GPA of at least 3.00.
Stanislaus: Fall
  • The Pre-licensure Nursing Program begins in the sophomore year. All applicants to the Pre-licensure Nursing Program must complete a CSU application for admission by November 30, and a Supplemental Application to the Pre-licensure Nursing Program by February 28 for fall admission. Requirements for admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program include:
  • Minimum overall grade point average of 3.00.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.75 in prerequisite science courses, and two of them must be complete at the time of application.
  • The following courses or their equivalents are the prerequisites to the Pre-licensure Nursing Program: English 1001 or English 1005, First-Year Composition; Chemistry 2090, 2092, Biochemistry for Nurses & Lab; Zoology 2250/2252, Human Anatomy with Laboratory, Zoology 2230/2232, Physiology with Laboratory; English 2000, Critical Inquiry or Philosophy 2000, Philosophical Inquiry; Communication Studies 2110, Group Discussion Processes, or Communication Studies 2000, Public Speaking; Mathematics 1600, Statistics; Microbiology 2010/2012, 3010/3032 Bacteriology for Nurses & Lab or Bacteriology & Lab.
  • Minimum overall grade point average of 2.50 in the prerequisites courses with a grade of "C" or better in each course. Half of the prerequisite courses must be completed at the time of application to the program, including at least two prerequisite science courses. The remaining prerequisite courses may be in progress at the time of the nursing application, and one course may be taken in the summer prior to entry. No single prerequisite course may be lower than a "C" (2.0). No more than two prerequisite courses may be repeated more than one time. Some prerequisites may be in progress upon application.
  • Preadmission Test: Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) TEAS Test. This standardized test measures academic skills in reading, English, science, and mathematics. These skills are demonstrated indicators of first-semester success in a nursing program. First-semester success in an indicator of successful continuance in a nursing program. The cut-off score for the ATI nationally is 40th percentile in each tested area. The cut-off score will be used to determine eligibility and for the ranking of applicants.
  • Additional points in ranking will be given for: second language competence, healthcare experience, On-going CSU Stanislaus students with 10 units in residency, permanent resident in CSU Stanislaus 6-county service area, and California residency.
  • Supplemental Nursing applications (CSUS) due by February 28

Occupational Therapy

Dominguez Hills: Fall and Spring

  • All applicants must apply as a pre-occupational therapy major. Upon successful completion of all prerequisite requirements, the student applies for admission to the Occupational Therapy major through the Department of Occupational Therapy.
  • Prerequisites include OTR 205 and 206; MAT 131; BIO 250 and 251; HSC 201; PSY 363; PED 301 or the equivalents of these courses; all General Education-Breadth requirements; all graduation requirements; and the Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR).
  • Academic success is reflected by GPA in designated required prerequisite coursework of 3.00 or better, desirable pattern of academic performance (i.e. consistency and/or improvement), and completion of all university requirements for the degree (with the exception of the professional junior and senior occupational therapy courses).
  • Evaluation by the Occupational Therapy Selection Committee of the student's potential to succeed in the program and the profession.
  • Three letters of recommendation. At least one of these should validate relevant work experience and/or knowledge of the health care field. The other two should comment on potential to succeed in the fieldwork and in the profession. Accordingly, it is recommended that one be from an employer or supervisor and the other two from faculty teaching the OTR curriculum at CSUDH. Recommendations should address recent activities.
  • Clarity of expression (oral and written) and relevant extracurricular activity as revealed by an extemporaneous essay and in the application form.
  • Other factors, which will be considered, are prior qualified application and California veteran status.

Political Science

San Diego: Fall

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher.
  • Complete the following courses or their equivalents with a C or better in each: Political Science 101, 102 (or 320), 103, and 201. Television, Film and New Media Production

San Diego: Fall

  • Complete a personal statement to be evaluated by the faculty.

Recording Arts

Chico: Fall and Spring

  • All applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Option in Recording Arts in the Department of Music, which include:
  • Beyond the minimum requirements for all applicants, supplemental criteria will be applied on a point scale of 72 possible points.
  • Completion of four prerequisite courses with grades of C or better at the time of submission of application. Prerequisite courses will be used for ranking academic achievement. Academic achievement will be awarded a maximum of 58 points.
  • 48 points will compose the grades in the four prerequisite courses. Points will be allocated for each letter grade: A=12; A- =11; B+ =10; B=9; B- =8; C+ =7; C=6; C- =5. (The four pre-requisite courses or their equivalents are: Music 101, 102 and 109 as well as Electrical and Computer Engineering 110).
  • 15 Points will compose SAT or ACT scores. Test must be taken no later than January, for the subsequent fall. A point scale for both SAT and ACT scores will be utilized.
  • 9 Points will compose Musical Ability and Prior Experience as follows:
  • 0-3 points for proficiency on performing instrument based on juried performance.
  • 0-3 points for production experience based on production quality and documentation.
  • 0-3 points for industry work experience based on letters of reference and amount of time worked.
  • Recent California veterans who submit an application to impacted majors within the official filing period, and who meet University admission requirements, will be given first priority for admission to these programs. A recent California veteran is one who qualifies as a resident for tuition purposes and who has been honorably discharged within four years of the date of his/her application.

.Dominguez Hills : Fall

  • All applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Audio Recording Option of the Digital Media Arts major each fall, which include:

  • Writing Skills based on an essay explaining the candidate's educational and career goals in the Audio Recording field.(4.00 to 0.00)*

*The faculty selection committee would grade each candidate on each criterion using a grade point scale of 4.00 to 0.00. By averaging the grade points of all four criteria, each candidate will have an overall grade point rating of 4.00 to 0.00. The top "40" candidates each fall would be selected for admission into the Audio Recording Option.

  • Applicants must have completed the following pre-requisite courses with a minimum grade point average of 2.50: BIOL 205, PSY 100, SOC 100, ANTH 120 or their equivalents, and a course in elementary statistics such as HDEV 250, MATH 180, PSY 110, or SOC 250 or their equivalents.
  • Applicants must submit a supplemental application to the department by January 20 for the fall semester. The application includes statements of biographical and educational background and a description of community and/or social work experience.
  • Each applicant must submit 2 letters of reference, one academic and one professional.
  • The number of applicants who can be admitted is limited by space availability. Eligible applicants will be selected for admission for admission based on cumulative grade point average.
San Diego: Fall
  • Complete the following courses or their equivalents with a minimum GPA of 2.40 and a grade of C or higher: Social Work 110, 120; Biology 100 or any three units in a human biology course; Economics 101 or three units of any economics course; Public Health 101; Psychology 101; Sociology 101; Psychology 270 or Sociology 201 or Statistics 250. San Bernardino: Fall

Students must apply to the Department of Social Work for admission into the B.A. in Social Work. To be eligible for admission, applicants must:

  • Complete an application for admission to the university and the BASW application, including a personal statement of commitment to the social work profession, two (2) letters of reference, and official transcripts.
  • Complete all required lower division General Education requirements with an overall grade point average of "C" (2.0) or better.
  • Complete additional required lower division requirements with a grade of "C" (2.0) or better.
San Francisco: Fall

Admission to the Social Work major is limited to students at the upper division level.  Requirements for admission for all students include:

  • Applicants must have completed lower division general education requirements including earning grades of "C" or higher in appropriate courses in human biology, macro economics, psychology and sociology.

  • Submit the Supplemental Program Application available at School of Social Work (click on Academic Programs– BASW-Application Forms).  Applications must be received by February 1, 2008.
  • Selection will be based on a consideration of academic performance as well as potential for professional practice, academic potential, level of motivation.

Sociology

San Diego: Fall
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher.
