Systemwide Risk Management

Pandemic Flu Information

No organization will be immune from the effects of a global pandemic. Every crisis contains two elements: risk and opportunity. The risks associated with pandemics are: an unpredictable timeline for when the event will occur; an indeterminate duration should the event occur; human suffering; disruption of normal life and business activities; disruption of transportation and other public services. The opportunities we are presented with are: planning and responding in a caring, compassionate and prudent manner; reducing the spread and continued transmission of the disease and delivering essential services to allow the CSU to continue in its important and vital mission.

H1N1 Flu 2009 - Situation Updates

New CDC Guidance: Summer and Day Camps are in session and with the impact of the H1N1 flu outbreak on younger people. On June 14, 2009, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued Interim Guidance for Day and Residential Campus, which focuses on early identification of ill campers and staff, staying home (or away from others) when ill, good cough and hand hygiene etiquette, and environmental controls that encourage use of these hygiene practices. On June 25, 2009, CDC updated their General Business and Workplace Guidence to state that a worker who has been exposed to a person with pandemic influenza A (H1N1) may continue to go to work unless he/she becomes ill.

A Pandemic is declared: On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6, which indicates that the new flu virus spreads easily from one person to another, the virus is found in many countries, and that a global pandemic is underway. WHO's decision to raise the pandemic alert to a Phase 6 was expected and is a reflection of the spread of the virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus.

CSU campuses are monitoring their individual campus situation and keeping abreast of state and local status. The CDC posted an Alert for Institutions of Higher Education on May 1, 2009. Current state information is available on California Department of Public Health. Current international information is available on the World Health Organization (WHO).

On May 22, 2009, the CDC posted Updated Guidance on closure of schools and child care facilities where there has been reported cases of the novel H1N1 flu virus. On May 6, 2009, CDC posted Interim CDC Guidance for Colleges and Universities, which addresses residence hall and large gathering recommendations.
