The International Public Management Association for Human Resources (IPMA-HR) is an organization that represents the interests of human resource professionals at the Federal, State and Local levels of government. IPMA-HR members include all levels of public sector HR professionals.
Out of twenty agencies that were nominated and four possible awards, the Human Resources Department at San Jose State University brought home the Agency Award for Excellence in the Western Region for the large (2,000 to 9,999 employees) agency category.
The award was presented at the Western Region – IPMA-HR Conference in Paradise, Arizona May 9-11, 2007, where Maria Elena Rivera, the SJSU, HR Associate Vice President presented on the topic “Creating an Exchange Relationship that Really Works". In less than two years, the SJSU Human Resources Department transformed to become a strategic, accountable and quality driven organization. The department was recognized for the overall quality of their program initiatives, accomplishments, and contributions that exceeds the normal operation of a good government human resources program.

APPA is an association that serves educational facilities professionals (formerly the Association of Physical Plant Administrators). APPA’s membership consists of more than 1,500 learning institutions encompassing over 5,200 individuals throughout the United States, Canada, and internationally.

Congratulations to Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) and their Facilities Services for the Award for Excellence from APPA! The Award for Excellence is APPA’s highest institutional honor for outstanding achievements in management of educational facilities. APPA is an organization that supports those responsible for the facilities of educational institutions. This is only the second time a CSU campus has received this distinction since Sacramento State was honored in 1989. They were able to accomplish this achievement with the support of leadership and the employment of quality improvement tools.
APPA’s recognition of excellence validates CSUSB’s President Albert Karnig’s declaration that the campus is one of the most scenic campuses in California with its spacious 430 acres, greenery that ‘greets the eyes everywhere,’ and its modern buildings. Tony Simpson, Director of Facilities Services, compliments his staff in Facilities Services saying, “All our staff work so hard to maintain a quality campus environment.” Vice President for Administration and Finance, David DeMauro, appreciates the APPA recognition of excellence from colleagues across the country and applauds Facilities Services staff for their exceptional performance. The National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education (NCCI) invites members of the higher education community to apply for a new award that recognizes leveraged improvement. "With this award, NCCI will recognize innovative approaches for leveraging the impact of best practices," said Rick Wallick, NCCI President, in announcing a new award, the NCCI Award for Leveraging Excellence. "While many institutions are engaged in designing and implementing innovative best practices, this award will recognize cases when such improvements are actively applied elsewhere for greater impact. We are looking for examples where excellence expanded beyond its origins has resulted in significant impact - improved service, improved outcomes, increased satisfaction, revenue generation, and/or cost savings." Wallick encourages NCCI members to consider applying and to encourage others who have leveraged their improvements to apply.
The award selection panel includes Mohammad H. Qayoumi, President, California State University, East Bay.
NCCI's web site www.ncci-cu.org gives full information on the award, as well as the online application process. Applications are due October 1, 2007.
