CSU Campuses Reach Out to Help Haiti

CSU campuses have responded to the crisis in Haiti after a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the country on Jan. 12, followed by a 6.1-magnitude aftershock on Jan. 20.  Several CSU presidents, including Cal State L.A. President James Rosser, San Diego State President Stephen Weber, CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani, Cal State Long Beach President F. King Alexander, Cal Poly Pomona President Michael Ortiz, Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez and CSU Dominguez Hills President Mildred García  have all sent messages to their campus communities highlighting ways to support those impacted by the quake.  San Jose State and Chico State have also provided information on their websites about organizations providing relief to Haiti. In addition student athletes at Cal Poly Pomona are raising funds, the Dominguez Hills campus is collecting food, clothing and medical supplies, while engineers at San Francisco State are preparing to send wheelchairs to survivors, and students at Chico State are leading  a fundraising drive for medical assistance.

From thousands of miles away researchers in San Diego State University’s Immersive Visualization Center are helping first-responders on the ground in Haiti. Music is playing an important role in raising funds at Cal State East Bay where a Haitian Relief Benefit Concert will take place Jan. 29 and at San Jose State’s concert for victims of the earthquake Feb. 7. So far, the campus community at Cal State San Bernardino has raised nearly $5,000 for the cause and CSUCI has teamed up with a local-fourth grader to raise cash for Red Cross relief efforts. CSU Northridge gathered dozens of their “gently” used athletic shoes for victims. Finally, Fresno State sent campus-wide alerts suggesting ways to donate and is currently working on a viral marketing campaign to encourage donations.
