About: Information on the CSU Early Assesment Program

 
Initiated in 2004, the EAP was established to provide opportunities for students to measure their readiness for college-level English and mathematics in their junior year of high school, and to facilitate opportunities for them to improve their skills during their senior year. California State University faculty and public school teachers have jointly created an expository reading and writing course that high schools can offer to 12th grade students to become proficient in English. The CSU also provides training workshops for teachers that provide instruction on how to teach this class. In addition, the CSU offers a Mathematical Diagnostic Test and an English Success diagnostic test over the Internet that students can use to practice and get an assessment of their skills. The program is an initiative of the California State University, the California Department of Education and the state’s public schools for the purpose of reducing the need for remedial classes in college.

The EAP is administered with the California Standards test. Students volunteer to take the test, which consists of 15 English questions and a written essay, and 15 math questions. Those who show proficiency in the EAP are exempt from the math and/or English placement tests required by the CSU for all first-time freshmen as a condition to enroll in college-level classes. Those who are not proficient must take the placement test. Students taking the EAP test receive a letter at the beginning of their high school senior year informing them whether upon entering a CSU campus, they would be able to enroll in college classes that earn credits toward the degree.
