(August 1, 2005) -- Officials from the United Auto Workers and California State University will hold a contract signing ceremony at 2 p.m. today at the CSU Chancellor’s Office in Long Beach.

The contract, which was negotiated in May and subsequently ratified by members of UAW Local 4123 and the CSU Board of Trustees, is the first-ever collective bargaining agreement for 6,000 Teaching Associates (TAs), Graduate Assistants (GAs) and Instructional Student Assistants (ISAs) at CSU.

Labor and management representatives attending today’s signing ceremony will include CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed, CSU Vice Chancellor Jackie McClain, CSU Assistant Vice Chancellor Sam Strafaci, UAW Region 5 Director Jim Wells and UAW Local 4123 Interim President Xochitl Lopez.

“Both CSU and union leaders took well thought-out and professional approaches to reach an agreement that will benefit our students,” said Strafaci, CSU assistant vice chancellor, human resources. “We are pleased to be signing a contract that rewards the contributions of CSU’s student employees.”

“This is a forward looking agreement that is going to be good for our members and good for the quality of education at CSU,” said Wells. “This successful effort by teaching associates, graduate assistants and instructional student assistants at CSU to reach a positive professional agreement with the university is part of a growing, nationwide movement among academic student employees.” The UAW represents tens of thousands of ASEs at CSU, the University of California, the University of Washington, the University of Massachusetts, and New York University.

“We expect that our current collective bargaining agreement and today’s signing ceremony will mark a new, productive and cooperative chapter in our Union’s relationship with the CSU,” said Raymond Wight, a UAW Local 4123 Bargaining Committee member, Interim Vice President of UAW Local 4123 and Instructional Student Assistant at San Diego State University.
