CSU Names Assembly Member Joe Simitian Legislator of the Year(February 18, 2004) -- Assembly member Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) has been selected as Legislator of the Year by the California State University system. Simitian will receive the award on Monday, March 22, 2004, during the CSU’s annual Legislative Day luncheon at the Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel.
The CSU’s students, alumni, Board of Trustees, Chancellor, and the 23 campus presidents will honor Simitian for his work in support of higher education as chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee #2 on Education Finance during the 2003 legislative session.
“Assemblyman Simitian truly deserves recognition as CSU Legislator of the Year,” said CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed. “He is known in academic circles as the education warrior and has continually demonstrated his knowledge of the issues and commitment to higher education, especially to the California State University."
Assemblyman Simitian began his government service as a member of the Palo Alto School Board and is serving his second term as the representative of California’s 21st Assembly District.
"I'm delighted to be honored by CSU as Legislator of the Year,” said Assemblyman Simitian. “I will continue to take an active role in strengthening the public education system at all levels. It is more important now than ever to give schools in this state the attention they deserve."
The CSU Alumni Legislative Day, held every spring, is a key opportunity for the CSU's 23 campuses to come together in Sacramento and collectively advocate for the CSU, the state leader in high-quality, accessible, student-focused higher education.
Also receiving the award along with Assembly Member Simitian is Assembly Member Rudy Bermúdez (D-Norwalk).
During the day, participants, including CSU alumni leaders, campus representatives, donors and community members from each legislative district visit legislators to discuss the critical role the CSU has in maintaining California’s economic prosperity.
