(November 24, 2003) – Joseph N. Crowley, who has been serving as interim president of San José State University since July, will remain in the position until a permanent president is appointed by the California State University Board of Trustees.
CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed, who had appointed Crowley as the interim president when former President Bob Caret assumed the presidency of Towson University last summer, expressed complete confidence in Crowley to lead the CSU’s oldest campus through the coming spring as the search for a new president continues. (Crowley is not a candidate for the permanent position.)
“Joe Crowley has the experience necessary to keep San José State on track as the CSU positions itself in Sacramento during the upcoming budgetary discussions,” Reed said. “Joe, with his many years as a former university president, knows what it takes to work with students, staff and faculty and community members during this transition period.”
Crowley spent 22 years as president of the University of Nevada, Reno. He has written several books on the role of university presidents, and continued to teach at the campus after his retirement.
The search for a SJSU president began in May 2003. Three finalists for the position were interviewed in mid-November, but the trustees did not find a candidate who best fit the needs of the campus, so they extended the search.
