Letter: Leave Monte Vista's name alone

Modesto Bee 5/1/07

Once again Turlock is faced with the bombastic suggestion by the administration of California State University, Stanislaus, to change a well-known street from Monte Vista Avenue to "University," or worse yet to "Monte Vista/University Avenue." Now we're talking about real confusion.

I served at Cal State Stanislaus for 21 years as registrar. Never in that time did I hear one student, prospective student or visitor to our campus complain that they had a hard time finding the university. Highway 99 is well-marked and it's only a straight shot down Monte Vista to the university.

Street naming is the business of the city of Turlock, not the university. Universities are known by the quality of education given, not by street names! Some brilliant person once said, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it." Long live Monte Vista Avenue!
