Association of state colleges and universities visits HSU

Times-Standard 3/2/07

A team from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) visited Humboldt State University this week to study and review the campus programs and initiatives that supported HSU's graduation rate of Hispanic and Latino students enrolled as freshmen in 1999.

Of the students in 1999 who identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino, 45 percent graduated from HSU between 2003 and 2005 -- a rate HSU describes as “extraordinarily high ... in comparison to past graduation rates for Hispanic and Latino students and to graduation rates at peer campuses.”

Vice President for Student Affairs Steven Butler, said in a press release: “We are pleased to be involved in the AASCU study and recognized for our efforts to help students graduate. We also hope that we learn something about ourselves from the AASCU review."

The AASCU team's stay, Thursday and today, included a tour of the HSU campus and meetings with faculty and academic leadership, the staff from Student Life and the Enrollment Management office.

AASCU representatives will be visiting several campuses in addition to HSU, and will publish the results of their study in a report: “Hispanic Student Success Study Program.”
