Cal State University faculty contract extension goes into effect

KESQ 3/26/07

A ten-day contract extension giving Cal State faculty and administrators another chance to negotiate a labor agreement went into effect today.

Faculty agreed yesterday to the contract extension that -- for now -- staves off the prospect of rolling strikes at campuses across the state.

Officials on both sides said the extension provides time to hammer out an agreement under guidelines in a new independent report.

The third-party fact finder's report recommends a nearly 25 percent pay raise over four years for CSU's faculty.

The report says CSU professors' salaries lag far behind those of their peers at other institutions.

CSU faculty voted last week to authorize a spring labor strike that could start as early as next month.
