Homeschooled students deserve equal process
Bakersfield Californian 3/15/07
The UC system recently improved its application process to better accommodate homeschoolers. Before, they would have to attend community college then transfer, or have near perfect scores on college entrance exams. Students can now submit a portfolio detailing their studies and educational experience.
This is good news for the 1.1 million students in the nation who are homeschooled. Homeschoolers still face challenges, but at least some doors have opened in California. The CSU system has been more accommodating. Cal State Bakersfield has basic requirements, in addition to the application process. Homeschooled applicants for CSUB must provide:
* Transcripts of coursework, including grades.
* Documentation of the homeschooling program.
* How and by whom applicants were evaluated in the courses they took.
It's time for the UC system to ease up on students trying to make a better life for themselves.
A homeschooled student may be better qualified for admission than a student coming straight out of a public high school. Until recently, that student in high school had an unfair advantage.
Keeping the university systems competitive among students who truly deserve the open spots will call for a more educated, enthusiastic workforce.
