Tribe, CSU San Marcos make pact on education

SANTA YSABEL INDIAN RESERVATION – Calling it a first in the region, the Santa Ysabel Indian band and Cal State San Marcos are making a formal commitment to work together to prepare native youth for college and increase tribal enrollment at the university.

Santa Ysabel tribal Chairman Johnny Hernandez and CSU San Marcos President Karen Haynes are scheduled to sign a four-page memorandum of understanding today at a 5 p.m. ceremony on the North County reservation.

Under the three-year agreement, the university and the 900-member tribe pledge to undertake specific steps and programs to promote higher education on the reservation.

A university official said the school is pursuing similar agreements with other tribes.
